I have graraged my '66 Dodge Dart since it has the cam gear failure last year. The car is in pretty good shape, not a lot of rust and I have fixed most of the suspension, driveline, engine and other parts. The engine is now 225-2bbl with a little (professionally) ported and milled head and with Dutra Duals. My best (with G-tech) is 16.48 sec and the car feel that strong (naturally, traffic light competition with modern cars). I have just picked up a 4-bbl Clifford manifold (non Hyperpak) from a swap. I'm going the keep the base engine, but just replacing the broken cam, lifters, oil pump (or does there are spare gears for it?). I think I have do the bearings for the crank, too (was 5500 rpms when the gear broke). I have read there is no more MP cams, and in the real words, I dont like to get another (had MP244) of there is something systematic in their pump gear teeths. I have automatic and 1:3.55 gears. Do I choose Comp Cams 264, or is there other good alternatives? My valve springs are good for 0.44"-0.45" lift, no more. This car will no more run wintertimes, and our summer is warm. I can accept a little racy idle, too. I like to get the peak power between 4500 and 5000. Red line will be 5500, and I'm going to add ARP bolts to connecting rods (have been thinking them many times when accelerating over 5000... |

Joug, There has been a lot of talk on oil pump drive gear failures, problem is that there is a very small contact area and a lot of sliding wear, the cam gear is quite a bit harder than the oil pump drive, if you do a search or talk to DD about it you may be able to get hardened gears from him. Or take them somewhere to harden yourself. |

I believe COMP has a good track record with oil drive failures. I would find a good used pump, or get one of Doc's hardened gears though. I think that COMP 264 cam should work fine with your valve springs, as it is not very radical. Lou |
