| Post subject: | better gas milage |
Hi can anyone sugest a 4 or even 5 speed transmission that will bolt up to a slant 6 in a stock 67 dart to improve the gas milage through better gearing. And what cars the better trany came from, so I can go pull one from the wrecking yard? Also would it bolt up to a 318 v8 motor or do you know one for this aswell? many thanks |

There's no direct bolt-up 5-speed. The 4-speed overdrive manual trans (A833OD) was available with the slant-6 in A-bodies (Dart, Valiant, Duster) for '75 and '76, and in F-bodies (Aspen, Volare) from '76-'81. You would need the trans, the bellhousing, the swing pedal assembly from a manual-trans '67-'76 A-body, the clutch linkage and linkage brackets preferably from a '75-'76 4-speed A-body, the centre section of the front floor pan containing the trans hump (cut and weld), and appropriate carpet. You'll also need to change the rear axle, 'cause the ratio that works well with an automatic is way too tall for use with the 4-speed. Lots of work, lots of cost. Do the math and make sure the payback time isn't measured in decades. What mileage are you getting now? What mileage would you like to get? |

I think they make an overdrive unit that bolts onto the back of a torqueflite. Not quite sure. |

They do. Gear vendors, right? But then you have to keep the car for 20 years to save money... |

Also, the last I knew it is only available for the 727 trans, not the 904, which is in most slant cars. You would have to check on that.
