Post subject:  Help finding a cylinder head....

Hi folks....

I am need of assistance in locating a post '68 cylinder head as described in DD's descriptions. I am located in Sydney Australia and as far as I understand it our Slant 6 powered cars were only ever built with early designed heads, even though they were fitted to cars later than 1968.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I currently have a fuel injected/turbocharged SL6, that I am quite happy with for the little money and research that has gone into it, but now am trying to build another engine more minded to extract more power. Forged pistons are on their way and have just taken delivery of some 198 rods for a little more "free-revving"... YIPPEE ! A bigger turbo and new intake design is also on the cards but this revised cylinder head design is looking like exactly what I need....please help.

kind regards,

Ray

Hi Ray
Are you sure you don't have the revised heads over there.
I've just been out in my garage and checked the heads I've been practicing my porting on. Comparing with the photos in the "combustion chamber" article they certainly looked more like the later style. They are all casting number 2843169 and they probably came off VE or VF Valiants. They all appear to have the revised style combustion chamber.
I've got enough of these heads laying around that I can afford to hacksaw them in half because its easier to work on them when I'm porting and flow bench testing them.

Thank you for your replies.

Doctor Dodge: Can you shed any light on appropriate casting numbers associated with these later "revised" cylinder heads ? Perhaps I did not research this enough and they may be available here although I find it unlikely. It would put a little damper on things here though as I am currently using a ported head from my 1970 VF Pacer, which is one of the last Slant 6 fitted cars produced here in Australia. If I in fact have the revised chamber then it seems I have nothing more to look forward to :(

Original-shape combustion chamber: 2206035
New-shape combustion chamber: 2843169.

But, bets are off with a post-'66 Australian Mopar, for I'm fairly certain Tonsley Park began casting not only blocks but heads to comply with OZ Local Content laws.

For years I've heard juicy rumours of engineering prototype slant-6 heads w/the Hemi-6 type combustion chamber, and of alloy slant-6 heads, "Made Solely by Chrysler Australia Ltd" as the '70-up rocker cover decal says. Never talked with anyone who ever saw any such a head, though.

PS: Ray of Moparmarket.com? Welcome onboard.

PPS: The VF wasn't the last \6 powered Mopar made in OZ, just the last one made for mass consumption in the Australian market. The 225 was available by special "downgrade" order in the VG, and Slant-6 powered Valiants were made well into the late '70s for export to e.g. South Africa. Think the last of these might've been a VK, but it's possible they sent over a few CL/CM cars.

FWIW, most of the fast drag racers don't worry too much about which head they use.

Some use the 75-up heads since they have more meat for porting supposedly.
