I recently bought a resorted Carter ball and ball carb for my 65 dart 225. I know it is running rich because at start up I get black condensation out of exhaust pipe which they turns to black smoke when car is warmed. so I know from ere i must adjust the fuel mixture screw but which way richens the fuel and which way leans it?

Make sure your choke is working correctly

The fuel fitting in the the front can't move when attaching the line to it. It will change the float height

I think my choke works...sometimes. i tested the thermostat spring In hot/cold water and it tightened and loosened it the correct directions but I think it would be better to buy a electric choke. does anyone know where to find these?

oh and another question. what does the thermostat on my exhaust manifold do because I think that may not be working as well.

you mean the choke thermostat? when its cold it closes your choke and as it warms up it will open it back up.

Hi gnome, and welcome to the forum. You should start by going to the 'sticky' FAQ in the 'engine' section, there are many links on carbs, and you will certainly find some refs. to your questions there.

There are many posts on the chokes and the best adjustments and modifications, use the search function and make a search for 'choke' and you'll get more than 3000 hits, try 'electric AND choke', and you'll get some 600 hits, then you can refine it from there with your carb type or other parameters. All red text are clickable links.

Sorry gnome and eppy25, a small window on an ancient screen made me look to low in the thread to see the original owner!
