What's a 390 carter? Did you mean a holley?

There is no difference in an AFB or an Edelbrock, same carb. Not sure if they come jetted differently in 500 form, there may be some proprietary differences by brand. Both carbs are manufactured side by side at the same plant.

Sounds like it needs floats.

Carters and Eddys are not identical. There are some differences, but not much. :D

The label riveted to the air horn. One says "Edelbrock" the other says "Carter AFB".

I bought an Edel 600 and a Carter 500. Far as I can tell they are the same carb except for jets/rods, and the 500 has a larger discharge ring setup (screwed on and removable) in the primary barrels. Looks like you could convert 500 to 600 and vv with that part.

Hey, if Dennis doesn't buy this 390 CFM carter, I will! Please let me know if it is still available. Thanks!

I think you're right, Lou. I also think we can make an AVS 500 if we put the new-style AVS top on a 500 and lose the weighted air door.

I got my ups finally and hooked up the 500cfm and i cant get the idle lower than 2000+ I don't have a tac so i don't know what its at butt its way too high it runs with no misses when the set screws all the way out and when i unplug the vac add it makes the idle a little slower
Do I need smaller jets?
Rick

If it won't run below 2000 rpm then its a huge vacuum leak...probably the PCV port or a large gasket mismatch.

Everytime I've had an engine that wouldn't idle below that high an rpm it was a big v leak.

The Carter 400 competition carbs are excellent, I used t run two on a dual quad years ago...that said, I'm not a big fan of Carter/Edelbrock carb design in general. But the small 400's were an good solution for dual carbs on a big V8. And tthe 500-600 cfm models run well in general but often have off idle stuble problems due to a poor accel pump system design.

I've built at least 100 of these over the last twenty years.
