| Post subject: | Fan Clutch Issues on My 63 Dart... |
I got real disappointed last week when the MP fan and thermal fan clutch I bought off ebay would not FIT my 63 Dodge Dart "Dutra 232." The fan, even though it's 18 inches in diameter, seems to be OK - the issue is that darn fan clutch - it's more than 2 inches "thick" - so the bottom line is that when I tried to install the whole assembly - it just would not work - the fan was touching the radiator. Does anyone know if there's a THIN fan clutch that might work? Part numbers would be helpful... I need something that is only 1 to 1.5 inches thick... Right now, I'm running a pretty Flex-i-lite 16 inch SS flex fan - but it's caused me to lose 50 RPM at idle in comparison with the stock 4 blade fan (but I guess I gain it back at high rpm?). I'm not a big fan (pun NOT intended) of flex fans - I once had one go south on me, and it wiped out my radiator in a most impressive manor. |

Does the fan clutch hit the radiator? With most of the fan clutch assemblies I've seen, the fan clutch comes the closest to the radiator. The fan mounts on the back side closer to the water pump............... |

Yes - I think something that is only 2 inches long will work - I've got a 1/5 inch spacer right now - and I still have probably another inch to the radiator. Of course, if I put the fan real close, I'll have to take the radiator out to put the fan in, instead of cheating and using a flat wrench like I normally do! |

For what is the fan clutch? I got a spacer in my car, but for what is the Fan Clutch? |

Ooops - I meant to say I have a "1.5 inch" spacer. The car is a 63 Dart. Does anyone know what the CFM requirements would be if I got an electric fan? Where I live in Oakland California, it gets up into the 90's during the summer. |

I'd be more worried about the amp requirements with a 63......... Electric fans take 5-10 amps to run, so unless you've upgraded your alternator, I wouldn't get an electric fan. |

I think I have a 60 or 65 amp. (It's whatever the rebuilders are doing these days). One thing that I found out is that some of the new "higher" amp alternators are not always good for older cars, since those new-fangled alts are designed for newer cars that idle faster. The bottom line, at least from what I read, is that you sometimes get better charging (at least at idle), from a lower amp alternator. I know mine's pretty good - there was a couple of weeks where every Friday I would leave my headlights on for no real reason other than old age (mine, not the car). Both times, the lights were on for about 4 hours, and both times the alternator was able to charge the battery completely in the 17 mile (40 minute) drive from Oakland to SF. Of course, it's pretty darn scary to see that ammeter needle BURIED to the right. I kept waiting for the nasty smell. Never got it. |

According to Derale: 2.8 - 3.8 liter w/AC 1200 cfm without/AC 780 cfm which seems low to me. According to Hayden: 3.2 - 4.0 liter 1900 cfm According to Perma Cool 4 cyl 1600 cfm 6 cyl 2000 cfm 8 cyl 3000 cfm big 8 cyl 4500 cfm No mention of automatic or manual, but I think an automatic puts more load on the system. I'd want at least 2000 cfm and get the biggest bang for the buck I could get (big version of cheap models...........) or multiple small ones. |

Yes - I was thinking somewhere in the range of 1800 to 2000 CFM (pulling). I'm guessing if I stay with something that draws 10 amps or less I'll be OK. |
