Post subject:  towing capacity of a 76 valiant?

Hello slant sixers,
Does anyone know the towing capacity of a '76 Valiant - slant six?
Alternatively, do you know how or where I could find out?
Thanks!

Towing capacity depends on the vehicle's equipment. If it's just ordinary bare-bones stock, the answer is "not much". Cooling system, rear axle, rear springs, etc. aren't up to hauling more than about 500 pounds safely and comfortably.

I have a 76 Valiant Brougham with a Slant Six too. Acording to the owner's manual, a Slant Six Valiant has a 100 lb. tongue load, and a 1000 lb trailer load.

With or without trailer towing package, Jon? That's an important detail. Ever see what happens to the late-style 2-spider 7-1/4" rear axle when it spits the spider gears out the case?

That's without the Light Trailer Towing Package. With that option (A34), the car would have a 200lb Tongue Load and a 2000lb Trailer load. However, Slant Six equipped cars are limited to 30 square feet of frontal area and 1000 lb Trailer Load. So in other words, no more than 1,000 lbs unless it's an 8 cylinder. I have the owner's manual and emissions equipment manual available if you have any other questions.

Back in my young and foolish days, I flat towed a 63 Ford Galaxie, race car, with a 64 Dodge Dart, 170 slant, 3 speed stick.

Just finished a 2100 mile trip, towing about 4,000lbs with my 86 Toyota P.U. 4 cyl 5spd. Averaged 19.9 mpg.

I would however, limit the Valiant to 1000 lbs. Big problem is stopping.

Last month I towed a newly aquired '64 Valiant 20 miles with my '90 Buick Park Avenue. It's a frame mounted, class 2 hitch and I'd say I was at the absolute maximum that should be towed with that setup. When I got it home I hooked the tow dolly up to the hitch on my '65 Valiant, just for a cool photo op.

I actually do use Kermit to spot my car trailer in the backyard. His short length/wheelbase and the fact that I have 360deg vision makes it way nicer than my longbed, camper top-equipped truck for maneuvering between trees and obstacles.
