Post subject:  oops, trouble....help please

Hi, This is my first post on this forum and its not a pleasant one...I have a nice one owner 1966 valiant with a slant six, the motor is a bit tired but doesnt blow smoke, Well the car has been in storage for a year, my problem is I got it running today and it needed lots and lots of water in the radiator....strange, and now there is water in the oil  I do have a spare good motor in storage also, but was wondering that it might be only a head gasket :?: I have flushed the motor/sump with 4 ltrs of a mixture of kerosine and new oil and it still doesnt look good....any ideas? Do slants have a weak spot? {block, head, gaskets etc} any help would be great as I need this old cruiser back on the road.....Ive kept it registered the whole time......cheers, Pete

Was there only water in the cooling system, or antifreeze? When you drained the oil, did water come out, or is it just condensation? It is possible, if there was just plain water in the cooling system, that the head gasket rusted through. If plain water, is there any chance it may have froze, and cracked the head or block?

thanks charrlie S, no chance of the water in the block freezing, not cold enough around here :D , and I didnt bother with coolant/antifreeze, never have on my older cars, water only, unless Im running a new/reco motor...when I drained it, chocolate milkshake time  ...anyway, Ive taken the head off and there looks like there was a problem at the rear, spark plug side, last 2 rear headbolts on that side had grey/brown goo over the threads, looks like goo seepage around the oil passage hole and water jacket holes....no broken gasket though :? .....Ive cleaned it all up, head back on...used GM sealant on new headgasket and ALL head bolt threads...I iwll set tappets in the morning, fingers crossed.....got to get some sleep......Im dyin to know if Ive fixed it.....cheers, Pete

GM sealant will not work on Mopars. Compatability issues.
Any cooling system should have antifreeze or at the very leasy a corrosion inhibitor, NEVER just plain water.

Oooh, I don't like the sound of an engine being without antifreeze for any length of time- antifreeze is more important for CORROSION protection than freezing protection in my part of the country. I'll bet that headgasket is *gone* around all the coolant passages. Its also possible (remotely) that a water jacket corroded all the way through to oil, too :(

morning guys..........well probably not eh?....goin up the docs{drivin mother inlaw} then home to get her goin{the val, not the mother inlaw} ....hope its not a jacket corroded through  .....i do agree, I should run antifreeze, and will do from now on.......i always had that fear of my dogs drinking some since i play alot with older cars{leaks} and never wanted them in that position, same with weed killer......thanks for your info....and yes, the head gasket looked a bit crappy{not dry/clean} around that area...it wasnt eaten through though, I suppose it loses its seal and the coolant/oil seeps underneath :?: .....cheers, Pete

Post subject:  Coolant leak into oil pan

I don't know if anyone else has ever noticed, but on my 1975 Slant 6 engine, one of the bolt holes for the timing chain cover bolt is drilled into the water jacket at the front of the engine. I think this could possibly leak coolant to the outside or even into the crankcase.
