Post subject:  Some Cylinder Head Questions

I'm in the process of putting my first /6 together. I have three RG 5 freeze plug blocks that came from early seventies Darts, along with the heads, (two that I have off the engines, 2843169-3 & 2843169-4 respectivly).

I have a 3698447 head that came off a Volare wagon with a Super Six induction, (the induction will be used on the project). The chart on heads in the Articles section indicates that this head has air injection ports.
Having read other posts in this section, I understand that this is not a desirable feature. Why not? , and, where are the air ports located?

Looking at the chambers, I can't see a lot of difference between them. They look to be "smileing", although not as pronounced as the pics in the "Revised Cyl Head" section in the Articles. I would think that as the years went by the chamber design was evolving for the better, but mabey not?

I liked the later head as it didn't have the plug tubes, (mine leak oil), but should I stick with the early heads?

The project will be for a slightly modified daily driver built for highway use, 904 auto. I plan on hogging out the doughnuts behind the valve seats and purchasing a regrind from "Dr D.", and bringing the "C" ratio up to nine and one half to one. Any tips on valves and or other mods are appreciated.

As far as I know, the only drawback to the air port is that you have to plug it. You can either tap and plug it or just make a small steel plate to bolt over it. I have done it both ways.

The later head will be 9 lbs heaver, some say the extra metal is good for stability, others say that it is just dead weight.
I tend to use the lighter parts to help keep the total vehicle weight as low as possible.
As for the chamber, it did not change after 1968 but it is alway a good idea to cc the chambers because volumes can differ, even on the same head.

Thanks for the advice. I think that I'll go with the early heads as I don't think that I need the extra weight if it's not going to do anything for me.
