Post subject:  Plug wiring
Thanks for aloowing me aboard this site. I just found a really nice '71 demon to restore, and I intend to keep it Slanted. I replaced the distributor cap today, and the car won't start. It ran poorly with the old wires, one of which was burned through. I carefully replaced the wires (I thought!) and no fire. Spark is definitely there. My question: what is the position of number one plug wire in relation to the notch in the cap? I'm thinking this will solve my dilema. I'll then plug them in 1-5-3-6-2-4 clockwise.
Second question: what is the timing spec? It's an automatic tranny one barrel.

#1 is the closest tower to the cap notch (slightly clockwise from the notch as you look down on the cap from above).

Set your timing to 5°BTDC for a start.

Going clockwise, the #1 wire is just past the clip on the right.

Check this link out - almost halfway down there is a heading "Facts for owners".
That drawing always works for me.

Just joined this site today, and I'm both impressed and very thankful. You guys are great! I got the info on the plug wiring and I was off by 110 degrees! I am so pleased that there is such a helpful and informative site for us slanted guys. My first slant was my first new car, a 1961 Valiant 170 hardtop. What a bullet proof gem. Wife Barbara cried when we sold it and got our first pickup, a 1964 Dodge 318.
I hope to be a contributor rather than a dumb questioner soon. Stay tuned for my first adventure in car restoation.

Does it really matter where #1 is located on the cap? As long as the wires are in the same direction, in the same order, and the rotor is pointing at the #1 wire when #1 is at tdc.....

Nope, the only reason why it matters is that a set of plug wires contains wires with length based on their installation in the prescribed cap towers.

Just a little plug wire tip: If you use 90 degree ends on selected wires at the cap, you can keep the wires from rubbing on the fender and wearing that hole in them.

That is true. The factory did so for some years.

(That said, if you're wearing holes in the insulation, you should probably look at buying better plug wires...!)

The new MOPAR cap I bought from the dealer actually has "1" molded next to the tower.

Or put 1/4" wire wrap over selected areas as a sacrificial wear area....
