I bought a new Mopar Performance electronic ignition kit for my '64 Valiant 3 years ago and I'm finally ready to install it. I discovered that there is no data or installation sheet with it and I've been unsuccessful locating one.

I have no problem figuring out the installation, but I would like to know the specs for mechanical and vacuum advance. Does anyone have that info?

While I'm at it, what are your opinions about the MP unit on a nearly stock car? It has a Super Six intake, a larger diameter exhaust and a future rebuild will include the later model stock cam and a clean-up porting job. Would a stock distributor be a better selection than the MP unit with this setup? If so, what year would you suggest?

we covered this a bit last year...

The MP distributor is setup for drag racing an may not allow a stable idle in normal street driving without a spring change.

The one I got to play with was 20 degrees mech advance and 20 degrees vac. adv. , meant to be installed at 10 BTDC for best performance (30/50 rule), all the mech advance was in by 1200 rpm....

doc a while back had covered the need in mild street mills to have the last bit of advance come in around 2000-2300...

good luck,

Yep, D.I.'s got it right. The specs on the MP distributor are "too much", "too fast". The centrifugal (mechanical) advance has only one return spring, and it's a super lightweight item, so all the mechanical advance gets dumped in just off idle. Really unsuitable for street use; ping city unless you retard the base timing way too far for good starting and general running.

Of course, if you're going to recurve the distributor, the MP unit's the same starting point as the factory unit.

The unit was in 66Dart's dual weber slant and the timing at idle bounced around like mad, our distributor had two very light springs in it (hair thin), and we swapped one out for a medium spring out of a big block distributor I just tore down for parts...that got it pretty close to 'all in by 2300'...

good place to start like Dan said....
