Post subject:  New gas tank, running out of gas at 1/4 tank!!!!!!!!!!

Hey fellas here is my situation,

I installed a new after market tank, with the original sending unit. Now for some unexplained reason my car runs out of gas at 1/4 tank!!! This has happened twice.

What gives?

Thanks JZ

Usually caused by the float arm on the sending unit hitting the tank bottom (or hanging up on something else) near the bottom of its travel.

Thanks Dan,so how do I fix it?
Is it because it is a reproduction tank and a og sender?

what year tank/sender are you dealing with? Maybe they have the wrong tank for the coresponding sender.

I had to learn all of this recently as I have searched for senders. 60-62, 63-66, and 67-up have different sending units in A bodies. So another possibility might be the wrong tank for your sending unit? Just a thought..

The sending unit is the original unit that came in the car,it is a 65 Dart.

The tank was suppose to be for 63-66 A-bodys.

In a worse case scenario I could always know that 1/4 tank is empty, but that would kind of be a bummer.

I think you can adust the sending unit by bending things so that it reads empty when it's sitting on the bottom of the tank.

Also make sure the end of the pickup tube is 1/4" from the bottom of the tank.

Post subject:  brute force fix-- bend the float rod slightly

If it as simple as it is bottoming too late or too early, try bending the float rod slightly, and gently. I have done this on toilet floats for years.

If it is an issue of gauge calibration, there are some small wheels on the back of the gas gauge that may need adjustment. I hooked up a 9v power supply ( a bunch of batteries hooked up) to the gauge and the sender, and tested the whole thing out before I put it all in the car. I had to make some small adjustments to the star wheels until I got it right. This isn't too hard.

Why would you ever want to do that? :? I thought it is supposed to have a slight interference fit to the bottom of the tank.
The filter on the end already holds the end of the steel tube up off the bottom even if the corner of the filter touches the bottom of the tank.

Thanks for the replys guys.I am just stumped on why I would have to do any bending on the sender, when the tank is suppose to be a exact replica. :?

o and toilet bowl........ :?
Far from, the car just took first place in the 60-66 A-body class at the Mopar Spring Fling which is the biggest Mopar car show on the west coast.

So most of the crud at the bottom of the tank stays out of the filter sock, and doesn't clog it up (we are talking 40 years of accumulation here...).

The sock should be parallel with the bottom of tank.
