Sending Unit removal?

Can I take the gas sending unit out without dropping the tank?

It looks like some adjustments are in order.

From my experiences with my Duster.......

No, you'll have to drop the tank, unless the floor board over it is rusted out.

I took the sending unit out of my '76 Valiant without removing the tank. That's been 15 years ago so I don't remember the details. I know I parked the front of the car pointing down a steep bank/ditch because I still had a half tank of fuel. (block the car so it does not roll away and over your body) Probably then jacked up the car body and left the axle on the ground, I had plenty of room to remove the retainer ring and pull out the sender. Found a sunk float to be the cause of my problem. The dealer told the previous owner 15 years earlier that it was a bad gauge in the instrument cluster. Nope, still same gauge in the car today and it still works great.

I don't know about a '65, but my '74 and '76 is easy to remove, without dropping the tank. Unless it's different, just crawl under there with a blunt punch and hammer. Tap the tangs along the edge of the retaining ring counter-clockwise to remove it. The rubber seal will probably be tenacious and won't give up easily. Don't give in to the temptation to grab the fuel outlet tube and wrench the whole thing loose (it is a fragile soldered joint). :shock: Get under the seal with something to pry it loose (you'll replace the seal anyway). Don't forget to CAREFULLY remove the thin grounding strap that connects the fuel outlet tube on the sending unit to the metal fuel line (I guess that's on a '65, too).

JZ, I just did my 62 without dropping the tank. I don't recall if yours has 2 straps or not, but mine has one. I just had to carefully rotate the filler tube 180 degrees (after disconnecting from rear quarter panel), and then I put a piece of plywood and a floor jack under it. I just loosened the tank strap enough and SLOWLY lowered. I had no problem getting it out and the tank never came to teh ground

The 60-62 sending units are much harder to remove then the 63 on up versions. Either one can be removed without pulling the fuel tank.

Be sure to drain the tank, or at least run it down to under 1/4 before pulling the sending unit. Do the work in a well ventilated area with no pilot light driven water heater or furnance around.

How do I know it's under 1/4 of a tank when my sending unit doesn't work???????????

just do like I do--run out of gas suddenly, put some more in, drive home and then wait a few weeks before you do anything. In the mean time, worry each time you take it out that *this* will be the time you run out. Eventually, you'll never have MORE than a 1/4 tank and you'll be set. ;-)

In all honesty, if you use the plywood and jack trick, you can do it with a fair amount of gas in there. If you're worried, you could always siphon from the tank at the fuel pump inlet hose. That way you don't lose any liquid gold...
