Post subject:  4 speed tranny for W100

I want a 4 speed tranny for my pickup but i dont know which one it is. i think its the A844 but im not sure if thats for cars or 2 wheel drives only.Doesnt it have to be made for a 4x4? And will it fit in place of my 3 speed without causing problems?I know ill have to punch a space in the floor but besides that is there anything else i need to know?

The most common is the NP435 with a granny first gear. The second is the NP445 which has a more usable 1st gear if your not trying to start out with a heavy load. The 445 is a full syncro wheras the 435 1st gear is non-syncro but 2,3 and 4 is.

the unobtainium trans is the NP540 5 spd OD unit...most W series Powerwagon guys I know would kill for one of those!

If your truck is a '74 W100 then you would need a married trans/transfer case I beleive. If you have a slushbox in there now a manual trans from the same family of trucks "should" bolt up to your x-fer case.

I could be wrong, so better check with a 4X4 shop.

Also Advance Adapters used to sell an adapter to fit an A833 car trans to a transfercase.....not sure why anybody would want to do that though.

So how much would one of them trannys cost a guy? Also if your interested in a trade i have a set of 2 piece headers i ordered from clifford that wont fit my application...id be willing to trade strait across if the tranny isnt worth any more than the header kit i got. I saw that the tranny in the pic had the E-brake mounted on the back of the tranny...can i remove that or would i be better off trying to use it? I think i want the NP435 so i can have the lowest granny gear for doin some off road stuff. Would mounting one of those intail any custom work since mine has a 3 spd now? I wouldnt have to change the cross member or anything like that would I?

well if you want a granny gear then my NP445 won't do. I will eventually need a set of headers though...yours hi or low starter?

They are for the high starter. Mines a low starter so i couldnt ever install them...GRRR. A granny gear would be nice but if no one else wants to do a trade,(wink wink DD) ill definately keep the option open...

THere was a set of low starter headers on Epay a few days ago. If I wasn't so tapped out right now I'd get 'em and swap ya...

While we are on the subject of granny 1st gears relating to the NP435 which is what I believe my 65 Sweptline has (havn't had a lot of quality reasearch time with it yet) what the heck is the secret to getting from first to second on this tranny without grinding a pound of gear??

My clutch and throwout are good but on the way up here from Carolina with the truck I tried everything and couldn't do a smooth first-second shift, all other shifts are fine.....

Does the tranny have problems? Do I need Dougs tranny?? Do i forget first and start in second?? Or am I just not old school enough to drive this thing properly :lol: :lol: It drives like a damned commercial moving truck...LoL...

First gear in a 435 is non-syncro. the only way to keep from sounding like a coffee grinder is to shift into 1st at a dead stop. I usually started out in 2nd gear...this was with my M-37(it had a 435). My W200 had the 445 and even with the taller 1st gear 2nd was better for starting out unless I had a load.

You can upshift just fine...but downshifting to 1st in a 435? fugettaboutit!

I am having grinding trouble while upshifting. Someone told me I probably need to "double clutch" when upshifting from first to second.

Sounds like I may have a problem.

If you don't mind emailing me off list at rock@intrex.net, I would like to discuss with you my buying your 445. I have bringing my 64 d100 back to life and now that it is close to done, might as well put in a a 445 to replace the 3 speed.

Hey Rock, once you do the swap please enlighten us on how to remove the old column linkeage.......I bought a 65 D100, well 64-1/2 actually and it had already been converted fron column to floor shift. When I asked the guy why he didn't remove the column shifter and linkeage he smiled and asked if I had a acetalene torch :shock:

Which I don't....please keep us posted.

I played with the truck the whole holiday period and didn't check posts til now...Kevin, someone is misinforming you re difficulty of snatching out the column shifter. I have done it twice, once when the first wore out the bushings on the end of the shift rods and I was so stupid I thought I couldn't fix it, so jerked 'er out and put in a Pep Boys floor shifter. Ugly. Second was when I took a nice one out of a boneyard find and jerked out the ugly floor shifter! Really, even in the nice July 98 degree 72 % humidity days it is only worth about three hours, including time for contemplation and brewskis. There is only a steel rod running from the shift lever connection down the tube to then appeart in the engine compartment. Be VERY careful not to drop the little pin that holds the shift lever to the rod at the steering wheel. In fact, it is worth much more than its weight in gold. What is Rob's word ? Unobtanium? Make a sketch or pic of the shifters and pins at the business end, or look on page 19-4 of the "Mopar Parts List for Dodge Trucks" book. Or ask and I will copy and mail you a copy of the page. It really is about like changing a tire.

I'll look into it hopefully by the end of the summer sometime. I learned a while back not to take the sellers advice, he had a lot of suggestions that left me trying not to laugh in his presence......

Glad to hear that I should have no problem getting the extra junk out of the way. I even bought a nice new column cover to put in once that linkage is gone.
