Ok guys, I'm new to the slant six and mopar worlds and I need you to help me decide. I just bought a 67 dodge dart that came with a 225. I've been planning all along to put a V8 in it for speed (I didn't think slant 6s could perform until I came here), sound, and torque. However, I just found out I have a 904 tranny which will make putting a V8 in even rougher and I would really like to keep the original engine in. So now I'm torn. I know you guys may be a little biased, but please try to answer my questions neutrally First of all, with appropriate exhaust, can I make it sound just as mean as a V8? Second, how reliable is a slant when you start making it drag-worthy? Third, I love torque. If I didn't love torque, I would just stick with my Baja Bug. Can I be satisfied in this area with a slant? I know you guys may hate me for these questions since it sounds like I'm just a V8 head but I really want to keep my slant six in but only if it can fulfull my pleasures. Please help, I really know nothing about slants. |

A inline 6 can have a mean and unique exhaust sound at the same time.(why sound like everbody else.........) Powerwise, you will get more out of a V8 (it's bigger), but with the 6 you'll have a lighter car that should handle better because of better weight distribution. And there are plenty of people here that race their /6's here..... |

When I got my 66 Barracuda, it had a 360/727/7 1/4, in her. Now a 170/904/8 3/4. Seems to me, at car shows, and at the track, it gets more attention then a lot of the V-8 cars. Dare to be different. Get inline. |

I ran a Clifford 6X2X1 header with 2-1/2" exhaust and a turbo muffler on my Valiant for a long time. It sounded like a 340 when you stood on it. With the header open there is not usually another car on the place that sounds like mine. (Unless I'm at a Slant race) |

Actually no matter which automatic transmission (904 or 727) you car has you still would need to swap it for a v8. There were some 727 automatics that had adapters to go from a small block v8 to the /6, which you could remove to use with a v8, but I don't think it's very likely you find those in a car.The plan of sticking with the /6 means the money you would've needed to put towards a transmission can now be used on the engine. From what I gather, your car will sound like a piston aircraft with a performance exhaust. I havent really had any straight answers on what to do with an exhaust, the best suggestion Ive had so far is to put a stock 318 muffler on, it is less restrictive but silences just as much as the /6 exhaust. Any of the performance mufflers will give you an annoying resonance at highway speeds. It would be nice if muffler shops would let you experiment with mufflers, but once you put it on, it's used. |

Check out some of the info about slant six record holders. At columbus, this year, there were 3 cars running in the 12's in the 1/4 mile with modified slant sixes. Some of these guys still haven't maxed out their cars yet. These slant six engines are very strong and reliable at the track and on the road when properly built. Some important things to know: You will need to endure countless "You could drop a 440 in there" comments from guys driving bullshit cars that don't know anything about what such a conversion really entails. Most of the guys who know Mopars (even v-8 guys) will recall the slant six was commonly considered bullet proof. The slant six racers are some of the nicest bunch of guys around, but we are pretty spread out.(around the world actually) Be prepared to travel some long distances to get to races where you can find other guys who really love their slant sixes.(check out the racing section of this site) You are not likely to get lots of interest at your local track. Mostly you'll see tuners and v-8 cars these days. I don't mind being different, and in a crowd of people, I don't mind proudly announcing that "It's a slant six!" I've stopped explaining why, but most of my family and friends know I could drop in any kind of motor I want. I want the slant six. |

i swooped up this mopar magazine. the only slant six car they had in there was a 70' barracuda. That was also the coolest car in there!!! the car had a hood scoop and rallye cluster, and bench seats, and looked exactly like a 426 cuda might look, except minus the hemi. |
