Hi...I have a chance to buy a 5 speed tranny out of a "98 dodge truck. Is it possible for it to work in a '73 dodge 4X4 power wagon (with the factory slant 6 and 3 on the 3 :P ) without going insane :evil: or should I just scrap the idea and go for a A-833 conversion? :? I have 3.91 gears 8) and use in on the highway daily.

If you have a divorced transfer case its a good idea (maybe)...if you have a co-joined trans and transfer case I think it would be more work than benefit.

Is the 98 trans from a 4x4?..can you get the transfer case with it? This would be a way better swap.

In answer to your question regarding if the '98 is a 4X4, yes it is. Does that make it easier? Any info or ideas are greatly appreciated and thanks for your time! :-)

Get everything from the bellhousing face to the differentials from the 98....lay it all out beside the 83,,,,and start figuring. Thats what I did to go from 3 to 5 in the Valaint. It ended up costing $200 and took 2 days....after a week of planning.

I personally would not do this swap without the 98 transfer case and driveshafts and shifters and mounts and and and....

Use the 83 bellhousing .. clutch linkage and pressure plate if they are 10" and up....use the 98 clutch disc if it is the same size as the pressure plate.

You better have a sympathetic machine shop nearby,,,,no prima donna ,,,,engineered-only crap will do. Expect $1000 as a finished cost.

The basic chassis changed between '73 and '98. The 5 speed more then likely has an integrated bellhousing for a v8.

Thanks for the info. I think that the 5 speed is too much work for me and my budget. Will a 4 speed overdrive from a 2 wheel drive full size pickup from the early 80's work at all? Thanks Again :) Kevin

It depends does the 80's truck four speed have the e-body shifter mounting holes tapped on the tailshaft? Is this transmission cheap and in the Greater St Louis Metropolitan area? If the answer to all these questions is yes then no it will not work for your truck and you need to give me the contact information so I can get it for my e-body slant six.

I suppose someone who isnt currently looking for one of these cheap can probably give you a more accurate accounting on whether or not it will work on your 4X4 as my opinion might be slightly biased towards geting this transmission myself if the answer to all the above questions is yes.. :lol: :lol: :lol: :twisted:

The 80's trucks did use a 833 od up until at least 1982. It will bolt directly to an e-body. The gearing for 123 is simliat to a three speed so you won't notice until the final shift.
