Post subject:  Removing charcoal canister

Since the charcoal canister on my car is cracked and the previous owner discarded all of the control systems for it, can I remove the canister and hook the vapor line to my fuel filter to make a return line that goes back to the fuel tank, sorta like what my D-150 has.

You really should repair this correctly. You can get another canister at a wrecking yard, out of pretty much any year/any vehicle with compatible hose sizes. A working canister saves you gas with zero drawback. But, if you decide to remove it, note that the return line from your fuel filter to your gas tank on your '82 isn't related to the fuel tank venting system. The fuel tank must be vented properly and safely (tank end of vent needs to be above max liquid fuel level, and engine end needs to well above top-of-tank level. Other than that, you don't really need to worry about anything.

So I can just unhook the hose and loop up on the inner fender? This car is not a daily driver so gas mileage does'nt really matter that much.

Why did they add the return line from the filter anyway
