so the other day im driving and all of a sudden the engine starts racing, hard. i hit the brakes, its still going full bore with no foot on the gas pedal, i pull over, switch into neutral, still racing, shut her off, and she coughs and shakes and surges for almost half a minute.

im thinking what on earth could that be? pull off the air filter, give a cursory check to the carb and it looks to me like a vacuum hose (egr) might have got stuck in the throttle linkage. i wire it up so that can't happen and go on my merry way.

the next time i start up cold i notice my fast idle doesn't kick in. im puzzled. i have to use the gas pedal to warm up the engine. so i check out the carb again, more thoroughly this time. THE FAST IDLE CAM IS MISSING! THE THING JUST FELL OFF! now this could definately be the fault of the good folks at Vance Carb. who did the rebuild, but i just had to laugh. and i thought immediately of dennis weaver. thankfully i have my old carb and i can just throw on the linkage.

by the way, does that cam serve any other function other than to warm the engine up when it is cold? ie am i missing out on other things my carb is supposed to do?

Runaway throttle is always exciting, isn't it? Sorta like a poor man's cruise control (a real poor man, 'cause he's about to lose his car and, um, his life.)

The fast idle cam's only job is to increase the engine idle speed when the choke's on.

I've dealt with some "possessed" carburetors that had all kinds of tricks up their sleeve...pieces falling off, plugs falling out, random and mysterious flooding...
