You also need the Control Module to go with the distributor and I believe a different value ballast resistor. I have all of mine upgraded, saves a lot of headaches.

The module will want a very constant voltage also so if you have a points type regulator, upgrade to the solid state Mopar, or Summit has a racing version that I prefer since none of my slants are daily drivers.

I've also used Pertronix in the past which will allow you to use your existing set-up and distributor but sounds like your distributor vacuum advance can needs attention first.

Here's the whole set-up.

Any electronic distributor with a vacuum advance will work as a starting point; you'll probably want to recurve it. That topic has been covered extensively here in the past. As far as what kind of module to use, see Here.

That is one great article on the HEI conversion, looks almost simpler than converting from points to Mopar Electronic.

Well, it's about the same amount of actual work, and you use the same (Mopar electronic) distributor, but you don't have to futz around with a ballast resistor, and the HEI module is both smaller and more powerful. I like this conversion a lot.
