Hello folks,

Since finding out via this forum that I have the supposedly puny 741 case for the 8 3/4 rear end, I have been thiniking to install a 3.91 in a 489 case (anyone want to sell one?). SO I have been looking for axles to change at the same time I change the pumpkin because I have the tapered axles held withlarge nuts now in my 64 d100 truck with 8 3/4. I have not been able to create or find a simple table of axle data arranged by year and body (A.B,C, etc) with column headings such as flange to flange width, perch center to perch center width, axle length, and spline count. I can't find enough data to fill out such a table, and what I find is contradictory. For instance. a fine West Coast place called Randy's Ring and Pinion lists E and C bodies as having 30 inch axles, yet other places list them at 28 inches. And I have found no place that says what body my truck is equivalent to but some folks tell me "C", yet I measure perch to perch centerline as 43 1/2 inches, and that dimension is not found in any Mopar literature I have.

SO, does anyone have such a simple accumulation of data? What length non tapered 5 x 4.5 inch bolt pattern axles fit the truck? I know I could pull them but that is what I to avoid til I have new ones!
Thanks
rock

Ignore the people claiming the 741 is "puny". It is the smallest-pinionshaft carrier, but it is plenty strong enough for any slant-6 you can realistically build and most small-block V8s. Only the hemi and 440 guys really need to worry about the 741. Enjoy being in the position of being able to use the relatively inexpensive 741 carrier, which you won't break, because everybody thinks they "need" a 742 or 489.

I've been using a 741 case 3.23 unit in my Darts for years. Stock gears have over 250k on them and still work great. Had it rebuilt about 100k ago with new clutches/bearings.
