Hi I am building turbo engine for my Valiant and I am thinking about the rear end. Could the 7 1/4 suregrip handle behind 400hp slant? If it breaks, what is the first thing to break? I have a 8 1/4 sg rear too, but the stupid finnish law won`t let me use it |

Wow, now that's some big brother in action. When they start lining people up for the furnaces it will be a good thing you can escape quickly with your 400 hp slant six powered dodge with 8 1/4 sure grip rear. I think 400 hp is too much for a 7 1/4, you will eventually shear off the axles or snap the teeth off the ring gear or break the yoke off the pinion. I'm just guessing, because I've never kept a 7 1/4 around long enough to break it. Then again, it could last a long time if you arn't really slamming it. If you must keep the 7 1/4, you'll have to go easy on it. I think they put 7 1/4 rears behind 318 engines, but a stock 318 isn't 400 hp either. |

I actually have 4 choices: 1. Keep 7 1/4 rear, becouse this car originally came with it 2. Build the engine around 170 block, the car originally came with 170. 3. Use 3 on tree, not a choice really. 4. Change the 8 1/4 rear after registeration and drive with "illegal" car. This all becouse if you change over 35% of original parts, it`s a "new" car. You have to pay new car taxes and the car have to pass new car requirements I am going to paint everything so I probably am going with choice 4... But I`d still like to know if I could manage with 7 1/4. |

In America, there would be a revolution over that. Heck, we had a revolution over a tax on tea. Good luck, and fight the power! Greg |

Don't be too hard on the Finns - in California we are required to retain 100% of the original emission components for 1976 and later autos, even if the car runs cleaner with aftermarket products! Big brother is alive and well and draining lots of $$$ out of car enthusiasts here in Calif. Of course, the simple solution is to own pre-1976 vehicles, which is more fun anyway. Good luck with the alterations. Perhaps you can register it/have it inspected with the 7 1/4 and other original parts, and change to the 8 1/4 afterwards? Steve 1966 Dodge Dart GT |

MFJ, if you got a 7 1/4 with sg, I might be interested in buying it, if you wont keep it. |

I would say that 180 - 200 rear wheel HP would be the max for a 7 1/4 SG 400 HP would break one fast. I have broken axle shafts, pinion stems and the SG's pinion gears (spider gears) out of 7 1/4 rears, they are not made to handle alot of torque. DD |

Thanks Doc So anything could break with 400hp. I´ll have to change 8 1/4 after registeration and hope that the inspector won`t notice it afterwards. Some of those knows old cars well and even own these too. skraecken: No, I don`t have SG. |

I'd suggest, as an experienced law "twister" (not breaker) that you install your 8 1/4 BEFORE the inspection, that way you can oil it and get a nice ride over a dirt road and it will look even older, greasier and dirtier than the car... Unless you tell me that finn inspectors can tell the diffrence btwn a 7 1/1 and a 8 1/4 mopar rear end, if this' the case I gently fold my knee to them. This way you'll get your car inspected with the 8 1/4 already in. Same goes to minor, undetectable mods, unless they can tell by your "I'm guilty" face |

400 hp? I wanna see that when you're through. Are you talking standard or metric horsepower?? P.S. - the 8.25 certainly won't be new, so I don't understand the "logic"..... Like Dan sed - unless they are mopar experts, how in the hell would your government officials know? D/W |

What is difference between standard and metric horsepower? All you need is a big turbo. It`s not that difficult Quote: P.S. - the 8.25 certainly won't be new, so I don't understand the "logic".....
It is "new" to this car. When you change over 35% parts that are not the original parts, the car must be taxed again, it is new car then... This is a stupid law to all car and motorcycle builder, everyone hates it. And tries to twist it...Cars must be inspected every year here in Finland. But I´ll take the risk and hope that they won´t notice it. Ok, this has gone far away fron the original subject |
