Ok, I know that is for big blocks, but I´m interested in how that system works exactly, anyone knows something about that?

The Air Grabber was the ram air setup used on Roadrunners. Its the little door that opens on the hood. I guess you could always buy a $1000 Roadrunner hood, cut it up and graft it to onto your $50 Duster hood.

so basicly when you really romp on the gas, the door opens up for more air?

The key to an "air grabber" system is to direct cooler outside air into the carb. Under hood air is pretty hot and therefore, less dense. Getting intake air that has not passed thru the radiator helps performance.

Many new cars have "fresh air" intake systems, many collect warm air when the engine is cold and then switch to cool outside air once the engine is to running temp.

Ok Doctor Dodge, so the whole idea is when you need more power you open the hatch and get fresh air from outside the car right?, then I suppose that the system needs to close under hood air entrance so you only receive air from outside the hood?

So if Im correct when hatch is close carb receives normal air from under hood by system letting hot air pass, so the system when is activated close under hood air pass by any seal?, personally I never seen that system, only hear about that.

I believe the vaccum from the motor is what caused the door to open. All the ones I have seen have had a canister mount on the hood with vaccum lines running to it.

"Air Grabber" was Plymouth's name for a switchable cold/warm air induction system. Dodge called theirs the "Ramcharger."

Early versions of the Air Grabber had fixed hood scoops (or side-facing inlet grilles on some models). There was ducting under the hood that coupled these inlets to the air cleaner base plate with a big foam ring that made a seal when the hood was closed. There was a vacuum operated air diverter valve in the ducting and a control switch inside the car that allowed the driver to choose cold (through the hood) air or warm (drawn from under the hood) air to the carb.

The later (1970-up) version of the Air Grabber is the cool one everyone remembers. Instead of having fixed scoops and a diverter in the ductwork, the scoop WAS the diverter. In "cold air" mode, the scoop raised up out of the hood and blocked the warm air inlet in the ducting below. In "warm air" mode, the scoop retracted flush with the hood and opened up the warm air inlets under the hood.

Here's a picture of an INCOMPLETE '70 Air-grabber hood. The under-hood ducting and vacuum operated diverter motor are only partially there, and the carb has the wrong air cleaner on it and it'll always get (at best) a mix of hot and cool air. This looks like a non-air-grabber car that's half-a&& converted to an air-grabber setup:

here's the correct air cleaner- the foam would seal to the smooth black surface around the outside of the air cleaner element when the hood closes. Nothing at all half-a&&ed about THIS car:

The later version had the cool little shark-jaws sticker painted on the side of the scoop when it pops up, too :-)

Actually it's probably the other way around..............

Vacuum keeps the doors closed cuz at WOT you have no vacuum.

You may be right...I just assumed by looking at pictures that the canister was some type of vacuum system. It might be a small electric motor.

I have never had the pleasure of owning a car equipped with one! :D

I think the door is opened by a electrical motor, I was thinking how to make a Air Grabber system for my Duster, but for space problems looks like I will need to put a Hood Scoop with door access so, when I activate the system, under hood air will be ceased to pass to air filter and only upper hood air will pass.

In that way It will not look so awesome as original, but will be working

avenger,
do you have any plans of doing some air grabber installations, or some custom intake work? if so keep us posted...

I´m doing my schematics right now, I looks like I will make my Air Grabber system with motorized Hood Scoop, so will look like orignal system.
