It's a term applied to a 2-door muscle car with wheelbase between about 100 and 112 inches—spawned by the original Mustang.

Some pony cars:
Ford Mustang
Mercury Couger (bigger than Mustang, better equipped)
Chevy Camaro
Pontiac Firebird (based on Camaro, better equipped)
Plymouth Barracuda (actually introduced before the Mustang, in both A and E body flavors)
Dodge Challenger (E body, bigger than E body Barracuda)
AMC Javelin
AMC AMX??? (a 2 seater based on the Javelin, ate Corvettes for lunch)

I would like one of each please. 8)

Actually the Barracuda came out a few months before the Mustang, even though the 'Cuda was a much better car, it did'nt have the runaway success of the Mustang though.

I've driven a 66 Mustang before and it was the flimsiest piece of crap I've ever seen. Fords unibody really sucks and the 200 straight six couldn't pull a greasy string out of a cat's butt.

Well, it WAS based on the lowest-end Ford chassis. My Moosefang-loving friends tell me that the "Shelby modification" (reinforcing the shock towers and re-locaiting the upper control arm mount points) is practically mandatory to make an early Moosefang handle better than a pig in sh*t.

You know, I could have lived my WHOLE life without that mental image...
