Post subject:  Carb problem => EGR carb on non EGR engine

Hi there! I'm the proud owner of a dart '68 (it's been only a few days actually :D ) but i've got a problem : my carb seem to be a holley 1945 and i've got a lot of unused lines on the carb (EGR system i think) so what should i do? Block some?
I join some pics.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hmmmm, seems that the correct carb would have been a Carter BBS, or Holley 1920.

The rule of thumb is to block off any unused vacuum ports, however, I'd be really tempted to remove that carb (1945), sell it to someone who needs it for their application, and replace it with a BBS.

I have no direct experience with the 1945 however others on here who have think it is the absolute worst set-up to have.

Good luck, and welcome.

Thanks for your welcome and your answer.
Actually, this carb has been mounted by the previous owner in replacement of the old carb but he didn't seem to care much about the model. Moreover, parts aren't plenty here in france!
I have a couple of weber downdraft carb for a small engine (simca 1500). Still they used to suck about 10-15L/100km (about 20mpg). Do you think i could adapt it?
Thanks for your help

Bienvenue ici!

It will be lots of fun to get your '68 Dart through the Controle Technique :-(

The other responses are correct; the Holley 1945 is not correct for this car. Although it can be made to work OK, it is not optimal and should be swapped for a more correct carburetor, preferably a Carter BBS. These cannot be found in France, but Here is a good choice (Carter BBS originally for '71-'73, fits and works just fine on a '68 ), or there's this one, but it is missing the choke pull-off (which the seller may have available). And This rare one is set up for manual choke!

A carburetor from a Simca 1500 will be much, much too small for your Dart.

I see you know the french system! It will be lotrs of fun to pass the CT (as we say this side of the ocean) indeed!
Still got a few questions : i still see about 5-6 tubes coming out of the carb on the carter BBS. What are they for? I actually own the repair manual for Darts 66-76 but it is quite incomplete and lacks lots of important schemes... Anyway, the shop manual is too expensive for now so...
Thanks for your answer et à bientôt!

I'll take a shot, then Dan can correct me

I just worked on mine last night, the BBS ports are:

Vacuum Advance from distributor, base, passenger side

Choke Pulloff, base, drivers side(usually has a self contained small vaccum line leading to pull-off diaphragm), missing on one of the ebay photos I noticed)

PCV emmissions from Valve cover, large port bottom drivers side

Fuel inlet, front

Thats all I know of, there may have been a few more ports on later models for air cleaner related items.

To answer your previous question, the other ports on your 1945 were emmisions related, everthing from controlling incoming air temp on the air cleaner housing, to gasoline vapor canisters, to EGR valves and sensors.

Regards,
Kevin

Where (country) was your Dart last registered? If it was outside of France, you may have trouble with les phares (type Americain, qui ne conforment pas au code Européen) and with les clignos arriere (roux au lieu d'ambres), among other things. I can help you sort this stuff out with locally-available part numbers, etc.

A: Thermostatic air cleaner vacuum source. You haven't got this on a '68, so you'd cap it.

B: Fuel bowl vent. No hose goes here on a '68, it just vents to atmosphere.

C: PCV (crankcase ventillation) hose goes here.

D: Vacuum spark advance hose goes here.

E: Choke pull-off hose goes here.

The only two books I know of that cover '67-'76 Darts are the Haynes and Chilton. Both garbage, you really need a factory manual for your '68. Import one from the USA, it is WELL worth the expense and hassle.
