Where would be the best place to install an x-pipe on a 71' duster?? Right after the headers or further back near the tailpipe tips. I ask this because the drive train is in the way almost the whole length of the car. |

Just a suggestion....go headers to 2.25" primaries about 32" long to a flowmaster "Y" and then to a 3" single exhaust through a single muffler. You might find 2.5" single to be enough. You get the advantages of a "X" and the lower price of single pipe and muffler. |

But a single exhaust don´t look very sporting!! while two looks sporting, and is more probably to get a V8 Engine sound with two exhaust. |

The X-Pipe is more effective closer to the headers. I'd have to agree that the dual exhaust looks better, and has a really cool sound to it. Doesnt sound like a V8, but with the right mufflers it definately has a strong aggressive sound to it |

I have true duals with a balance pipe placed just before the tail of my trans ends. I have a 904, for ballparking purposes. I have a very nice yet almost stock quiet low end, it "brrrroomssss" a li'l btwn 55 and 58 mph (nothing big, I had the same issue before installing my balance pipe and the balance pipe made it much less noticeable, now I can listen to ther music if I want, still I rather listen to my slant....) But the low end ended up very enhanced by adding the balance. I have headers, 1 3/4" primaries, 2 1/4" tailpipes to the end. |

Somewhere I read the following idea, have not tried it. Put a bit of paint (not high temp, just regular) on the pipes. Drive the car in your normal fashion. Where the paint starts burning off first is where the pipe is the hottest. That's where the crossover needs to be installed, to do the greatest amount of benefit for the system.- Erik |

I would bet that, properly engineered, it doesn't make a difference. The fastest cars I know use a Y into single pipe (2.5" up to 3.5"). I have a single 3" on my fast car (14s in 1/4). which is better- duals or free flow single with a y? A big recommendation from Cameron Tilley, owner of two of the most powerful Slant cars in the world, is to run your primary pipes down about 0-8" past your trans X-member, and then into a Y to 3" or 3.5" single. My 64 has the Y just ahead of the X-member, so I'll be moving it back soon. Lou |
