Well, thanks fellows...I thought my 741 was right tough after what I laid on it for 41 years...I had it in my mind as indestructible...u-joints have gove out with nary a whine from the rear end. But, the darn positraction is hard to find now that I want it. Assuming the perches and tread width are ok, is there any reason we can't use 9 1/4 inch rear ends from late '90's dodge ram 1500's behind our slant sixes? The complete 9 1/4 pumpkin is new for 200 -300 bucks, not the $1,000 they get for the 489 gearset.

In a truck, sure, but why bother putting that huge differential in anything else?

I would think that one from a Ram would have the perches on the wrong side of the axle tubes and would be too wide for an A-body.

One oput of a Dakota R/T would almost be a bolt-in, but then you would have the stupid 6 lug wheels.

Post subject:  uhhh. thanks guys, 6 lugs...no way

Uhhh,
that's why asking questions before sweating is good. I was so focused on the gear set I didn't think about the lugs. Six is a little much.
