the original air cleaner i have is in pretty bad shape. i used a ring of silicone to replace the rubber seal on the top. the cap atop the snorkel won't stay down for anything. is there any performance advantage to buying a new air cleaner? if so what kind? also, i have seen a product at pep boys, forget the name of it, but it sits inside the air cleaner and has vents like a fan. its supposed to spin and increase your air intake and provide more horsepower and better gas mileage. has anyone used something like this? they run for about $6o. |

the toilet bowl theory............. Snake Oil, definitely not worth it (unless you can get one at the 99 cent store to try.............) |

Your air cleaner sounds as if it's falling apart.For best performance and driveability, replace it with another '70 or later slant-6 1bbl air cleaner. The '76-up ones that are ducted with a flexible hose to the front of the car to take in cold air are best, if you can figure out a place to put the cold air intake end of the hose. The performance advantage comes from having an air cleaner that's intact and working. The open-element so-called "performance" type sold everywhere would be a step backwards; with those, you're not getting heated air when you can use it, to improve cold-engine driveability, but you do get barbecue-hot engine bay air when you don't want it, reducing the charge density and thereby reducing performance with a hot engine. There is no performance benefit to a K&N air cleaner or filter element; just use a good quality "paper" (stock type) replacement element. Popular mechanics just did a dyno test on some of the snake oil performance dohickeys, the Tornado(what I think your talking about), did pretty much nothing, a cheaper version of the Tornado actually lost horsepower. |

So SSDan you say that my open element air filter is a bad idea?, before you say something like "get a air cleaner with snorkel" those a extremenly difficult to get here, and when you get one is for something like 120 dollars or more. Is that so, what do you think about the idea to make a Air Grabber for my ´71 Duster? that will help to correct the barbecue-hot air effect?

So should i try to get one from the autoparts store or just go to the boneyard? Anybody know of a junkyard around Atlanta that has a good selection of MOPARS? And i just route that intake up close to the grille so she can pull in all that fresh air, right? |

An auto parts store will not have a replacement air cleaner housing for you; you'll need to get one from a yard. Use www.car-part.com (searchable used auto parts) to find a wrecking yard that has the part. Search 1977 Dodge Aspen air box/air cleaner (so you get the cleaner assembly that's equipped to take the duct hose), then on the next page set the year range to 1976-1980. Results will show all engines (because this is an uncatalogued part)—make sure you get one from a 225-1bbl engine. The duct needs to be routed so it gets cold air, but so that rain can't get in. Most of the factory setups are routed to a hole in the radiator support panel adjacent to the battery. |

Pull-A-Part is one Atlanta junkyard that has a lot of '70s Chrysler products, and at pretty cheap prices too. It's where I bought my Super Six manifolds, not to mention the throttle body and elbow I'm going to be using for my fuel injection installation. |
