O.k, my 79 Dodge van has the welded 2 piece aluminum intake, 1945 carb, egr is bypassed. This thing has a miss on #4 at idle only. Is it possible, that this intake is cracked in the heat pocket area, (between intake and exhaust manifolds by the heat riser) that is leaning out #4? The van only has 57xxx mi. and has been well taken care of. (bought it from a friend) If so, can this manifold be repaired, or should I get a cast iron one from a bone yard? Also, i've read that there were 2 different sizes of "heat pocket" areas. Are these interchangeable? Thanks in advance!! |

Those 2-piece EB-welded aluminum intakes were very problematic for Chrysler, in much the same fashion as the F-body Aspen and Volare cars were. If you got a good one, you got a good one. If you got a bad one...well...you were screwed until you scrapped it. At this late date, almost any F-body survivor is likely to have originally been a relatively good one. The same is generally true for those EBW manifolds, though even the good ones are much more prone to floor cracks than any other type of manifold, simply due to the thin aluminum vs. the high temperature gradients and thermal cycling in that area. Old low-miles vehicles often show problems that cause oldtimers to say things like "Yeah, we had about four of those a week back when I worked at the dealership when those cars were just out of warranty!"All of that is a longwinded way of saying yes, a persistent and difficult-to-nail single- or multiple-cylinder misfire could be (and often was) caused by a faulty EBW manifold. That doesn't mean it's necessarily so. Cast iron 1bbl intakes are easy to find, and they do swap directly. I even see the nice sandcast Feather Duster / Dart Lite or '60-model items go by on eBay from time to time. Hotbox sizes: Yes, there are two. Small ('60-'69 cast iron intakes plus all aluminum intakes) and large ('70-up cast iron intakes). All intakes interchange, just make sure the one you use has all the right holes for your application. '60 manifolds don't have a PCV port, though your 1945 carb (yetch) doesn't need one. Pre-'73 manifolds don't have EGR provisions, and California '72 manifolds have full-time always-open floor jet EGR (yetch). Maybe this is a good time to swap in a 2bbl setup! |

I have been thinking about the 2bbl setup. That may solve my idle problem, and give this thing some guts on the low end. It's a dog pulling away from a stoplight. Thanks again for the reply. |
