Ok... I know I should know this, but I'm checking... Numerically lower rearend ratios give you more torque and less speed, while higher gives you more speed and less torque. This means that higher rearend ratios give better gas mileage, while lower gives worse gas mileage, right? Chris |

Numerically higher ratios = engine has to spin faster for any given car speed. Higher rpm usually means engine requires more gas which means worse mileage. |

Numerically higher rear axle ratio = better city gas mileage. Numerically lower rear axle ratio = better highway gas mileage. Undergear the car and the engine will be lugging all the time = poor mileage. Overgear the car and the engine will be screaming all the time = poor mileage. The trick is to pick the one that matches your driving conditions. |
