many thanks to you guys here. from basic to the most wierd needle in a haystack problems, you all have helped this slant back to life. it's running. not without its problems but it is running. ive noticed already that theres smoke. like a whitish smoke. not much, and it went away kinda... but its coming out the tailpipe, and i must have an exhaust leak under the hood, because its there too. it think from where the intake and the exhaust meet for the heat riser. also ive noticed it really really desnt like the haynes manual setting of 5 btdc. it favors, and runs a lot smoother, no stumble, or rumble at 10 or more.... something out of adjustment, or what?
and i hope i didnt make an oops by putting this copper goop on both sides of the intake and exhaust manifold gasket. it really likes to just keep on smokin after i turn it off.

Sweet.... 10btdc is fine..maybe go a little more.

Im sure that sealer will burn off after a wile.

I've noticed that my truck runs a lot better with a few extra degrees of advance at idle. I think this is due to lower compression from age and wear. I then recurved a distributor to take advantage of that.

You might have sticking parts in the distributor, but it's not necessarily indicated. If you will be advancing the timing any farther than about 4* from the factory setting, you risk running the total advance too far. You could get a dial back timing light and check your total advance at about 2500 rpm (disconnect the vac advance during this test). You should be right around 30* advanced and most older stock engines seem fine up to 34*, but after that, you should think about recurving.

Doug Dutra insists that his testing indicates 30* is optimal total for performance motors.

Overly advanced timing can cause ping and poor mileage, so keep in mind that while 12* -15* can idle very nicely, a distributor recurve will be in order to get the most out of the higher RPM ranges.

and of course NOW it chooses to have a nice steady drip right at the rear of the engine. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. noticed now a lil steady knock sometimes on revving.

and at proper timing of 5 btdc, the idle smoothed out a quite a bit by fiddling with the screw at the very bottom of the carb. anyone got an old dwell tach they wanna mail me?

that little screw at the bottom of the carb, if yours is anything like mine, should be the fuel/air mix... i believe turning in (clockwise) makes the mix lean and turning out makes it rich. i have a holley 1945 one barrel and was told by several folks that if i needed to reset the fuel/air mix i should turn screw all the way in (careful not to turn too hard, just until it seats) and then back it out 1 3/4 turns.

you didn't mention what you're driving...
