Post subject:  Transmission Dipstick Tube Leak

I traced a persistent transmission fluid leak to around the dipstick tube. I can't tell if it's because of the bad fit between the O-ring and the tube or that the tube is not held in the hole well.
The transmission is a cable-shift 904 in a '64 Valiant.
What is the right O-ring size?
What is the correct thread for the hold-down bolt? A non-original 5/16" coarse thread bolt was in there. The threads are in bad shape, so I'll probably have to helicoil it.
Is this threaded hole blind?
Suggestions?

5/16 coarse sounds correct - should only be about 3/8 inch long.

The hole goes all the way through the case - then was taped from
both ends - one side is the dipstick tube bolt hole - the other is a
pan bolt.

The dipstick tube should also have a "flag" near the top which
gets a trans to engine block block through it to provide support.

I don't know what size o ring - it is a thick one an 1/8" or more
- it has to fill the groove in the tube.

Thanks. Yes, the tube has the flag that goes to the bellhousing. That helps with vibration, but not much with clamping. The original tube had a leak through the tear at the spotweld.
I haven't found a good, thick O-ring yet, but I'll keep looking. It also has to squeeze down to fit the hole in the case.
And I'll dig up my helicoil kit for the hold down bolt hole... just wondering how I can do this without pulling the trans. I've pulled the transmission a few times before, and I really don't like it ...

Is your dipstick dented or bent in the critical seal "o" ring area?(spot weld? )- a local tranny shop should have a kit that alows you to cut off the lower portion & replace damaged "o" ring areas(does away with the mounting flange you now have) . I used one on my 65 valiant & it worked fine-- Also later models do not even use the mounting bolt arrangement-they just use the bell housing mount & a good "o"ring seal. Good luck

My local NAPA shows the 904 dipstick tube "o" ring for my 65 Dart as part of an overhaul kit. Any NAPA or Chrysler number known for the ring only?
