i rebuilt my slant six, put it back in the car hooked everything back up and attempted to start it. the starter will not crank the engine tho. it sounds like it is trying really hard to but nothing happens. also it gets very hot.the starter is brand new. and will crank when not bolted into the car. im pretty sure my motor is frozen and i have no idea why. any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated |

Been there done that. In my case, it was a main bearing cap was put on backwards, I thought they were symetrical but they aren't. Forget the starter, you should be able to turn it over with a breaker bar on the crank bolt. Don't tear up your starter any more then it already has been. Once you can get it moving easily by hand then you should be able to crank it over with the starter |

i needed to turn my engine to get her back to the first cylinder after i had done some work on the distributor. everyone kept telling me, yeah just use the bolt on the pulley. all i found was a hole in the center of it. but there are also 6 holes around the edge so i made my own tool to turn the engine. i got some black pipe, 1/2' in diameter. run a 90 to a 2 1/2" nipple to a tee to a 12" section of pipe. put close nipples in the 90 and the tee. the close nipples fit in the holes around the perimeter of the pulley and the 12" pipe is your lever. i didn't need any extra leverage but if you do just grab a longer section of 1" pipe. its custom man, and very cheap. |

If there is no bolt in the middle of the pulley it is a 3/4 inch by 16 threads per inch by 2 inches. I was able to get a 3/4x16x2 from Bolt Depot for somewhere around $2. |
