| Post subject: | Spark Plug Installation |
Don't be scared I've installed many spark plugs during the regular servicing of my vehicles. That's not what I'm asking. What I'm asking is this: Several times I've read in posts here that you should remove the o-ring(?) on the spark plug, because the Spark Plug Tube actually does the sealing for you. Now I've got my NGK's from the parts store, and they have two thin metal washers on them. Should I remove these, or leave 'em. Thanks folks. On a side note, I hate my parts store. For this reason: I ordered these spark plugs two days ago, I had someone run down there yesterday to pick them up, I had my baby boy with me and no car seat in the car. So they bring them home and I open up the first box. And lo, what do I NOT find...a spark plug. Yep, they sent me 6 boxes and only 5 plugs. So I'll be going back today and getting the replacement one I bitched about. |

What year is your engine? The heads with the "tubes" are the ones that you are supposed to remove the washers from your plugs. I think they ran up to 1975. |

It's a '71 Engine, so I'll be removing those washers. And my blaster 2 coil came in today. One more part to play with this weekend. |

Here is a link back to one of the last discussions on the spark plug gasket topic. Note 60-62 heads are in a class by themselves - http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... 5&start=10 |

Ah ha! Most informative, thank you for that. I shouldn't have to worry about those 60-62 heads any time soon. But If I do, I'll remember to put those darn washers in. |

...and the taper-seat spark plugs used in the "no plug tube" heads (started in '75) don't have washers in the first place! |

Autolite 65 is a gasket-seat plug for the '74-down heads. NGK UR4 (standard V-groove), UR4GP (Platinum) or Autolite 26 (standard resistor) 16 (standard nonresistor) for the '75-up heads. |
