My 69 Dart had the idiot light system. I'd like to install a real aftermkt. guage. Is there any that use the stock sender, or does that have to be changed? |

The "sender" for the idiot light is a pressure switch - it's on or off, depending on the oil pressure. On my '64, the switch is on the passenger side of the block, near the transmission bellhousing. To use a gauge, you'll need to either plumb a pressure line to a mechanical gauge, or add a sensor designed for the electric gauge. To keep the idiot light and a gauge, use a tee fitting. The pressure switch goes in one side, and the sender in the other. |

yep. Easiest to change to a commonly available 1/8" NPT sender for your "idiot light" while you're at it, too. That will simplify the adaption of the tee. Also, cut the end off of one of the plastic insulation "nails" protruding through the firewall near where you want to mount the gauge (it is hollow inside). Use this as a grommet to run the line through, you won't even have to drill a hole! Make sure you get the copper capillary line, and throw the plastic one that comes with the gauge in the trash. You spelled it correctly that time! I have to think about it every single time, too. Agreed on the copper line. Make sure you put a loose loop in the line, to allow for some movement. Hot oil is no fun outside the engine. |
