Post subject:  She won't start!!!!

Here it is, the big time of the starting! But she actually won't... Too bad.
Here are the facts :
She got fuel fed to the carb, although leaking from the inlet of the carb (the previous owner just f**ked up the thread by trying to make a metric thread fit... No comment).
She got ignition. Didn't check at the plugs but the coil works.

Though, she just sometimes coughs when the starter turns and that's all...
Then i put a few (well a bit more) drops of gasoline in the carb (it doesn't have air filter by the way) and it starts for like 2seconds at about mid speed and then stall... It also makes me a nice flame when i do that, is that normal? It's not supposed to back fire in the carb am i wrong?

What should i do? Prayers? Change of hobby?

Thanks for your help!

Marc

may be a shot in the dark but maybe the timing is off. ths happened to me on the 59 coronet. timing was retarded. set timing and try it again.

another possibility migt be the carb. may be out of adjustment.

are all of your plug wires on the right plugs and in the right holes on the cap?

but it sounds like the carb isnt accepting the gas. maybe its flooding out, or the float is stuck closed, not allowing the bowl to fill with gas

like i said, may be a shot in the dark, but if youre like me, any help is greatly appreciated.

Good luck

Well i don't think it's that but not certain at all. Actually, it leaks because there's a bad connection at the inlet.

I do think so! How should i set it to get a basic - starting set up?

Timing might actually be retarded like 2-3°. Should i set it to 0?

Thanks again!

I've found that cold engines start best with around 10* of advance. Now, if your factory timing is supposed to be 0, you should correct the timing after you get it started and get the carb adjusted a little better.

I'll have to check your old posts to see what carb you have before I can advise you about adjustment.

Could also be lots of things, but I'll have a bunch of questions after I do a little reading of your previous posts.

I'll make it easier for you. I've got a holley 1945 (yes that's right, i don't know how did it get there...).
Oh and by the way, my choke vacuum thing lacks a small rod that's supposed (i guess) to put the carb on fast idle. => Even cold the fast idle doesn't work i think.

Dump that carb and find one that hasn't been fudged and missing pieces. Even if it's another 1945, make sure it's a good one. Then, advance the timing a few degrees and fire her up.

Good 1 bbl carbs are easily puchased though the parts wanted section of this site, and it would be worthwhile to pay a few extra $ for one that has been recently rebuilt and/or confirmed to actually run in the past few weeks.

I suggest you buy from a site member with a few posts under their belt. I don't have any for sale right now, but the other experienced guys know which parts are good and which are not.

Well, i'll try to get a new carb but it will take about 2-3weeks to make it to France and by that time i'd like to get it started so...
For the advance, what should i use to make it 10° advance?

Post subject:  Oh, in France

Didn't realize you are across the pond, I guess getting a replacement is a little more difficult that way.

To advance 10*, you will need to loosen the distributor clamp and turn the body of the distributor counter clockwise about 5* (because distributor degrees double at the crankshaft) A timing light is a very helpful tool for making a proper adjustment.

If you can not turn the distributor counter clockwise far enough, then you will need to remove and reinstall it. I've explained the procedure many times, so do a search. The bar style clamp has another adjustment on the underside of the distributor which can be used to solve the adjustment problems.
