Post subject:  Spark plug Wires

I was looking at my ignition system this afternoon and i wondered why my wires are about 10Kohms for 5 of them and 20K for the 6th. Anyway, can i replace them (all) by some classic wire without any electrical resistance? Same thing for the coil, do I really need it?
I can get it make by a shop near my town but they only can do it with "normal" wire (without resistance).
Good/bad idea?
I'm actually running my coil to distributor wire with a normal one. Could that be why it won't start?
Thanks for your help.

A good non-resistor coil wire won't make your car not start - a Mopar ignition system just isn't that finicky. Some resistive wire kits I've had just came with a simple solid core coil-to-dist wire and resistor wires for the rest.

Typical graphite-impregnated kelvar core wires vary quite abit in resistance, but those #s are normal enough - that said, while an infinite resistance indicates a bad wire, normal resistance doesn't prove the wire is good. Often old wires can get very flaky and give intermittant problems.

Old coils can give lots of problems too - they do wear out due to the insulation inside breaking down over time and/or leaking. If your coil has anything like 1,000,000,000 sparks on it I'd replace it.

I've been very pleased with Magnecor brand wires and very, very disappointed with MSW and Belden brands. Over the years, I've found the expensive wires are NOT necc. quality wires.

I would also try to inspect any wires before I bought them, as you cannot always believe the packaging. MSW, for example, claimed to be helical metal core & made in USA, but when I got home and opened the box, they were simple graphite/kelvar foriegn made junk that weren't even close to the right length.

I was also suprised to find that Motorcraft wires for my Ford weren't a particularly good fit despite the high $.
