| Post subject: | TBI Conversion-Anyone Tried this? |
Hi All, I have in my driveway a totaled but very good running 1988 Dodge 100 pickup with a TBI 3.9 V6 and automatic transmission. While debating its fate the thought ocurred to me that I might be able to adapt it's Throttle Body Injection to use on my 66 Dart with a slant (of course). Has anyone tried or attempted this conversion? Obviously issues exist with the intake (I believe one would have to be fabricated) and the ignition/distributor. Any comments, thoughts or experience please post. Thanks! Todd |

That should be a very good swap. You will probably just need a Slant 4bbl intake (Offy or Clifford) and then make an adapter plate to mate the TB to it. The truck's computer may need several sensor signals to operate correctly (ignition, O2, MAP...). Weld an O2 sensor bung into your header, or drill and tap your manifold for one. Lou |

The Holley throttle body is a little tall ....(My GFs 88 Dakota has a 3.9 TBI that I have studied),,,,you may have some hood clearance issues. The rest is a piece of cake......the hardest part is a pump and return line. you could use a Rochester 220 TB ,,,,it has a lower profile,,,injectors interchange with the Holley. Turbo City has adapter plates cheap. |

As Sandy says, physically this would not be a difficult adaptation. But, the TBI system on the '88-'91 3.9, 5.2 and 5.9 litre engines is known for its poor driveability and fuel economy. I've got this system on my own '89 truck, and wish I didn't. The hardware is mediocre and the software is primitive. If I were considering a TBI swap, I would probably do something more along the lines of what Sandy has described doing: GM hardware and a GM computer with a custom chip. If a GM TBI swap were for some reason out of the question, and the only two options available to me were a well-set-up 2bbl carburetor or the '88-'91 Dodge truck TBI, I'd take the carburetor. I have no aversion to fuel injection, in most cases it's generally superior to a carburetor; I do however have an aversion to halfassed engineering and sloppy implementation, and this system involves both of those things. |

I agree with Dan on half=assed and primitive. I hate the freekin Dakota,,,and will use GM stuff for my TBI conversion. I have done a GM TBI coversion before and found it relatively easy and got very rewarding results. |

Or you could use the TB with a Mega Squirt setup and be better off... http://msefi.com/ |
