 Post subject: Ballast resistor

Could someone please explain to me why I need a ballast resistor if I have converted to an electronic ignition system? I understand the need for it while using points, but why also for electronic ignition? Wouldn't a hotter spark be better at all times??? What risk is there in burning up the coil? Or, what coil from what application would be acceptable to run without the ballast resistor?

If you converted from points to electronic ignition, you have to change the coil no matter what (stock points coil vs stock EI coil is different).

Stock coils, regardless of applicaiton for our era cars, require a ballast. If your upgrading, and want to ditch the ballast, go for an msd blaster 2.

The Mopar electronic ignition system is designed and intended to run with a ballast resistor. If you want to eliminate the ballast resistor, replace the Mopar electronic ignition box with an HEI module.
