PLEAE HELP! I finally finished putting the rebuilt head from a 77 Aspen on my 65 Dart. The car never burned a drop of oil prior however there was always a good bit of blowby oil at the breather and a ridge at the top of each cylinder and some scoring. I didn'tlike the looks of this but went ahead and did the swap-w-a steel shim gasket (part # again please???) and the head I ported a little and had .060 taken off. I started it and it looked like a mosquito foger. Luckily I got another motor in waiting in the wings. My question is should I inspect this short block for wear and use it if it is clean & relatively unworn in the cylinders or should I just get the bottom end end rebuilt? Also - and this is important please - could this burning of oil in such a large quantity cause high engine temps? While it was running it got really hot to where I had to run water on the radiator to keep it at 190 degrees. If I do get the engine done should I go-w-something other than a stock cam? What would be the criteria for just a diassemble, hone & rering/bearings? |

sounds like your block is shot (shot rings) plus I'm willing to bet that the gasket aint sealing properly. (That's why you had to keep running water into the rad to keep it cool, there's some water going inside the chambers I'd say.... |

It could be water being burned if the smoke is white? Bad head gasket. You might just try a good composite gasket like the FelPro. They are about 0.033" compressed so you don't lose much comp over a steel gasket, but it'll never leak. You could also have a crack in your head... Lou |

Well I'm no expert however I did a compression check for the heck of it. I know this isn't the real test for bad oil rings but I felt like doing it anyway. I got 5 cyl within 10 lbs of 150 but only had 100 lbs on #3. Squirted some oil down the cylinder and it showed 150lbs. Obviously this is a bad hole. In addition given the ridge and scoring of the walls I'd have to say the rings are not going to reseal as they have to when untorqueing and retorqueing a block by changing the head. I got the other slant home and am about to look at it to see if there is obviouse wear and/or taper. If it has any ridge or taper I'm getting it rebuilt. I know a dude who will do a rebuild-w-rebore for $450.00 if I supply some of the stuff off the bad motor like the new timing chain and a couple of other minor items. I can't imagine it is a bad gasket cause there isn't steam in the exhaust that I can notice and the oil is clean as a whistle plus there is no contminants in the coolant. On another note this car came-w-a really small radiator. I had it recored but-w-after market A/C Im thinking about a new one. The problem is there is such a small amt of room from the front of the motor to the radiator. Can someone recommend a thin radiator? It is about 25% sheet metal anyway. |
