I'm going to install my Super Six setup in a couple of weeks, and I'd like to get the choke working. I have the thermostatic coil that bolts to the exhaust manifold with a wire coming out of it, but I understand the wire doesn't just connect to a hot lead, that it's supposed to be hooked up to a choke relay mounted on the engine. I've seen them before at JY's, but can't find a source to get them new. I haven't checked the dealership yet, but are these relays still available anywhere? Thanks in advance!

NAPA will sell you a new one, see Here.

I don't much like the original electric-assist chokes. When the stars line up right, they work OK, but the thermostatic coils aren't adjustable for tension, so pretty much what you get is what you get.

The electric choke conversion kit's a better deal. Whole kit will cost about the same as a replacement original type choke modulator.

Thanks, Dan. To be honest, I've already GOT the electric choke conversion you refer to, ready to bolt on if necessary. However, I've got the same conversion on my current 1bbl, and have never gotten it to operate properly (despite many hours of tweaking and following the included directions). Therefore, I thought I'd try to get the original factory choke working before I resort to the aftermarket piece. I'll try NAPA for the relay, and if I can't get the factory set-up to work, I'll try the conversion. Thanks again!

That picture of the choke thermostat is for the V8 engine, it has that extra ceramic reistor hanging on the side. The Slant 6 ones do NOT use that extra resistor. This is clearly spelled out in my factory service manuals of any year I look in.

Also note that is the older rectangular one. It was replaced by a little round one in about 1978 or 1979. The little round one comes with or without the resistor depending on application. Slant 6 does NOT use the resistor. V8 does use the resistor.

I tried looking at napa.online using the part number and description provided, and got nothing. I guess I can take the picture and part numbers to a local store, if I can trust the #%&* behind the counter. Otherwise, guess it's the JY's for me... Thanks anyways for all of the help, guys!

True. The ones with the extra resistor work better, though—the extra resistor gives finer/more accurate ambient-temperature compensation. The use of the simpler modulator on \6 cars was a cost-saving measure by Chrysler, nothing more, just like the use of smaller wheels/tires, smaller springs, smaller alternators, etc. on 6-cylinder cars.
The choke modulator does not know or care how many cylinders the engine has. It only knows what the ambient temperature is. The units without the external resistor have two output possibilities: On or Off. The ones with the resistor have high, low and off.

FYI, I finally made it by a local NAPA (few and far between in these parts), and they were able to order a choke modulator for me. $47 (ouch!), but Dan never said it would be cheap. Thank you very much, SSD — your encyclopedic knowledge never ceases to amaze me. I'd have never found it without your help!
