Slant Six Forum :: Nitros will it work for me?

First of all i would like to say hello to everyone! I'm new here. I own a 1964 Dodge Dart Gt with a slant six and a 904-a tranny that goes to a 7 1/4 rear with 3.55 gears. Motor wise, i have a clifford alumiun intake, with a 268 Comp Cam, port and polished heads shaved of 1000th and a weber 44 idf carb. My tranny has been rebuilt and has a shift kit in it along with a 2000 stall converter. But it just doesnt make enough power, i am guessing that i am running a High 15 to a low 16. Would the way that my set up is do you think that if i ran a small shot of nitros like a 75 shot it would be safe and make some extra power? What are your thoughts....and were can i get such a kit.

Do you REALLY have a 7-1/4 rear in there and not an 8-1/4??? If so, I personally doubt that it will survive to much lower times than 15 seconds, especially if the car hooks up solidly. They're pretty weak units.

A 7 1/4 with a sure grip is a lot stronger then most people think. I ran one with 3.91 gears for many years, street and strip. 13 sec car, with 1.78 60 foot times.

Will it hold up to a 75 shot? Certainly. Will a 75 shot be enough forever? No way.

The main problem is the intake. I don't think anyone makes a plate for it. However, Doug has posted his one nozzle fogger setup on this site before, and it is a very good option. I think he is spraying 150-175 through his and it is running very well.

Summit Racing has what you want in the way of equipment. The knowledge you need to accomplish this may be a little harder to get. You better start reading. Search "nitrous" "NO2" and "melted pistons"

Well i went from a 1bbl to the 44 idf and i personally love it. So do you guys think the nitros would work for me? Or do i need to change my pistons and so on... Thanks for the help!

Had it behind N/A motor, a turbo, and nitrous. A 7 1/4 open is a crap shoot. Would not use a 7 1/4 behind a stick, only a auto.

Any rear end that only holds a pint of oil makes me a little nervous. I'll admit that I have run an open 7.25 up over 100,000 miles, but it was a gently-driven '83 Diplomat with that final version of the /6 that couldn't break a rear end made of toothpicks. And it was making "unhappy noises" when the car was sold.

I agree that a 7 1/4 "open" is junk and I would not beat on one when I am to far away from home. A 7 1/4 with a Sure Grip is a much stronger unit and I have run those with good success... trouble is that these are getting real hard to find these days. As for a small shot of NOS into a stock engine, no problem. As noted by Slantzilla, I have gone as far as putting a couple of nozzels into a 1 bbl manifold and doing that took 3 seconds off the car! So with my current setup a 75 horsepower shot would work safely, like slantzilla said. Now as for the setup would a simple setup that just sprays into the actual intake work? Or do i acutally need to get a carb plate? If i get a carb plate is there one available for a 2bbl Webber carb? Thanks Mike

You can spray right into the manifold by drilling some hole directly into the intake but you need to be careful about getting good distribution to all cylinders. A "fast and easy" way to go is to use the new "Top Shot" nozzel which bolts to the carb's air cleaner post and sprays down into the carb. DD

I'm also interested in the TopShot NOS system made by Holley. I think you can rig it to the top of any carb, attaching it to the stud in the center of the carb. The other stuff, solenoids, go in the air cleaner. I'm not a Weber expert- might not work if it is a side draft carb. I'm interested in it on my slant because I think it has a choice of 75, 100 or 150 and without the plate the heigth is a little less so I can use a flat hood.
