Post subject:  How do I begin porting a slant head?

Im looking for advice on where to begin with porting and polishing a slant 6 head, what works best, a dremel??? what stones???

Start by taking the head off the engine.
I used a dremmel with a tungsten carbide cutter and several different stones.

I have been working on mine... the exhaust first. anyway I am using a die grinder with 6" long carbide bits I got from summit racing. They seam to work well. when I am done with the cutters I will "polish" with 60 grit sandpaper rolls.

Do not take any material off the floors. Blend in the transition from the valve seat to the port. Remove most of the valve guide bosses to smooth the port - more on the exh side than int.

Do not remove the squared section between int/exh ports or you will hit water. You can blend it some, but don't get carried away.

These are points from Cameron Tilley and Mike Jeffrey that I just did on my head. I made too many other changes to really tell much, but it does seem to rev more freely to high rpm now.

Does anybody have any pics of a slant six head thats been ported??

Lou, When you said dont port the floors- do you mean dont port intake
and exhaust floors or just one or the other??

rob how's that coming anyway? Have you taken any pics of that? I'm interested to hear how the progress is going.

The floors means the bottoms of the port runners as you look at the head on the engine. My comment above means don't remove any material (except casting flash) from the floors on ANY of the ports.
