| Post subject: | thinner tank radiator needed for 65 Dart |
My 65 has little room up front and I need a recommendation to replace the radiator. I looed at a lot in the Carquest book and they offer several-w-thinner tanks that look as if they would go in OK. Anyone have a replacement suggestion |

H'mm. Interesting request. You want a radiator with thinner tanks? How come? The top tank is the thickest part of the radiator, sure, but...what is it that your stock top tank is getting in the way of? What are you trying to accomplish? |

Do you mean thinner or shorter? I put a new radiator, sized for a '76 Dodge Aspen slant-six in my '64 Valiant. During the fitting before drilling the mounting holes, I put the bottom tank within 1/8" of the bottom ledge. I still had to use a radiator cap without a lever to prevent interference with the hool.  Notice the precision reuseable clearance determinator - balled up aluminum foil placed on the cap before closing the hood.

But the aluminum will expand againg once you open up the hood.

Lightly crumpled aluminum foil doesn't have much elasticity to it in that situation. Even if it had sprung back, it showed inadequate clearance. Remember, cars flex, and I don't want any force on top of the cap. So, I used the shorter cap. I am looking at the possibility of cutting or reshaping the shelf/ledge, or whatever you call that panel to allow a lower position for the radiator. The goal here is to have a non-stressed home for the radiator with good airflow and proper position with respect to the fan. I replaced the original radiator because it and my same-year spare both had bad tanks which radiator shops had tried and failed to repair. I was surprised to notice that the new radiator core was no wider than what it replaced. I could have looked for a wider radiator, but they had this one and I needed it in short order. So far, so good! |

Replace the belt-drive power-sucking, gas-wasting fan with a electric one. That'll free up some space. I mounted mine in front of the radiator, behind the grill. Now I can take out the pulley bolts without removing the radiator. |
