| Post subject: | Building a Slant Six, what's best aka Junkyards |
Well I'm going to build a nice little slant six for a daily driver... once I get a little Duster/Demon/Dart Sport. So I've been shopping around and seeing what I can come up with. See if this breakdown seems like a good gameplan. Slant Six engine ( been offered a complete 67 drivetrain, but hear 68-74 is best) Head (Which year is best for mpg and performance) Super Six Setup (have intake and exhaust manifold already) Newer Alternator ( Mini-van, one out of F/M/J body also works) A/C (70's F/M/J for newer compressor) Petronix or MP setup (whichever is cheaper) Carb (What would be best for the Super Six) Tranny ( Aspen s 3-speed with overdrive or 904 lockup from M body cop car) Anything else I should look into? I'm looking for something with decent mileage to replace my 93 RamCharger that gets 12-15 mpg. In one of the 64-65 barracudas, there was a tachometer on the dash, to the left of the main instrument cluster. If you are going back, I would like the tach, and would be happy to pay you for it. Thanks, Greg |

Ah yes, my friends 65 Formula S barracuda, 273 4-speed car originally. He owns the junkyard and has that green 64/65 barracuda as well. That is in/out of his yard depending on his mood. Sorry but the tach isn't for sale. Ryan |

Ryan, Carter BBD would probably be the easiest for your carb, can be found on lots of late F-body's with super sixes as well as 318 cars. Easy to rebuilt, just take your time and take lots of pictures. Alternatively is they do show up from time to time on e-bag as over priced and from the reports here generally poorly rebuilt. Either way there are lots of posts throughout this board on the carter bbd, use the search function and you should learn lots. I have a 71 slant six with about 30K miles that will be in Sterling, IL in the coming weeks, it is a complete motor from oil pan to air cleaner, was running when pulled if you are interested. Finally, in your first link of pics, there is a green dart swinger in that junk yard, any chance the door panels and arm rests are still on the car and in decent condition? Brian |

Yeah, I read up about the Carter BBD and the Holley. Just seeing what people have a preference for and if there were other carbs out there that would work beter for the super six setup. Actually I own that 74 Swinger. It is still sitting in Macomb IL, I have yet to pick it up. The door panels and everything are there. If I ever get it back, I might just part it out, if they didn't crush it already... haven't talked to them in a while. I am interested in the 71 slant six. It is about an hour from me. Any good junkyards out there so I could take some new pics? Ryan |

I'm going with a BBD when I get around to Super Sixing mine, but there are other carbs people have used. The Holley-Weber 5200 progressive two-barrel makes an interesting choice, too. It just takes a bit more tinkering. |

I am not currently in Sterling, but I grew up there, as far as i know there are not a lot of good junk yards left around there. Most of the stuff has been snapped up and most of the mopar stuff that was around went to Oregon, IL to Mopar City. They have a pretty impressive stretch of land or did the last time I was up there but its been a number of years since I was up there. Let me know what you find out about the Swinger. I need to reach out to the guy I am geting the 225 from, and see when it will be deliver to Sterling. I am also getting a complete 198 motor as well, if you would rather build a long rod motor?? I've been to Mopar City a few times. Some of my pictures in page 1 I believe of the black Superbee, blue challenger, black 67 barracuda are all from Mopar City. I appreciate it, but I need to start basic. I can't put much money into the engine because i'm in the process of finishing up the restoration of my 71 Challenger R/T clone... and I got that Hemee in the corner... Ryan |

I would say it looks worth it, but then again, I just bought 72 Dart Swinger in similar condition for $100.00 but it looks like you got a tranny to go with it. Now the question is...on the underside of the hood is it just Carbon or was there some sort of engine fire? If things work out the way they are suppose to, that 71 225 should be in Sterling the weekend before Halloween. Brian |

It looks to be just dirt and soot. The hood used to have dual scoops, but are long gone. I know of a 74 Valiant I am going to pull dash parts off of, maybe the power steering setup as well. Ryan |

Alright, here is a picture of the 74 Valiant. It is a slant six with drum brakes. But it has electronic ignition so can I pull the distributor, box, wiring and such and throw it in the Demon, or are 71 and 74 different? Also a 74 Dodge truck with a 2-bbl 318 came to the yard today. Would the carb work on the 2-bbl super six?
