Post subject:  2BL or 4BL

I am using a slant to build a hot rod out of a 1927 nash the engine is a 225 out of a 74 dodge dart. It has a 1Bl on now I was wanting to use a Clifford intake but do I use a 2BL or 4BL? Do I need to open up the exhaust with header or leave them stock.

Stick with a two-barrel, unless you plan to update the cam and do some porting on the head.

IMO a primary/secondary 2BBL would be the best.........

You'd keep the small primary for fuel economy and then have the secondary for power. Unless you do alot of work on your engine, a 4bbl is just too big

Post subject:  2 barrel

The 2 barrel carb seems to work best for a lightly modified street engine.
I have a 500 edelbrock on a offy manifold and although it seems to do
ok, I feel that it is a bit much for an engine with a stock cam and no headwork done to it. It could pick up a little on the drag strip with a 2 barrel carb but for the next engine thats going in the car the 4 barrel
setup will work great. It does have a tendacy to run rich and bog a tiny bit
from my experience, it also proves to be a reliable street carb though.
So Id save the 4 barrel carbs for the nicely modded street engines and
drag cars, But go for the 2 barrel for easy street tunability- I even
noticed some of the racers are running 2 barrels. Bigger isn't always
better especially when it comes to carbs. Just my .02...Thanks Michael

Post subject:  Header..

Forgot to add. I myself would go with a header, I use a mopar 6x1.
I picked a nice bit of low end with this and the offy intake..

I ran a holley 390 4 barrel for 5 years with just the intake change without any trouble, and my mileage got better actually.

I still have the same one on there today, just with headers and allot of other goodies now.

Throw the Clifford away and get an Offy and a 390 Holley. Your street motor will thank you for it.

Slantzilla, Have you compared the offy intake to the clifford???
I love the low end the offy provides but dont know how it compares
to the clifford. The clifford intakes are overpriced IMO, right at $300
for the manifold and then $48 for the carb adapter  . The
offy is definetly the better buy from summit for about $230.00....

I don't know why some people seem to be so scared of a four barrel. its well within what you can do to the engine without having to open it up.

This is a debate for the Ages...

I have run 14s with Edel and Holley 4bbls and 14s with a Holley 2bbl. Both can be made to run on the street too.

I have to agree with lou

The only comment one can add to this is more flow produces more power, but if you channel that flow thru more smaller openings rather than one big opening, you help the lower end by gradually and slowly equilibrating the pressure drop. If you have 2 BIG BIG barrels, and one small primaries 4 barrels, and otherwise than the "mouth" each one has they flow about the same, they will perform the same belor certain RPM range, but the small primaries 4 barrels wil kick 2 bbl's ass on the low range and you'll get better driveability.

I have noticed this using a staged 36mm-36mm solex that Shibby used to fit on some 230CID straight six engines they produced down here... they work nice on the low side and if you really step on it they respond great, and you get a very nice compromise between power and mileage. I just found one carb lying in my car parts bucket the other day and I gave it a try today.... nice carb... of course that after all the dialing, my 2300 is nicer, but I think that I can get a decent street carb out of this solex...

...putting a huge carb on a wheezer head and cam is silly. Like telling someone with athsma that they'll get more air if they open their mouth wider. It may not hurt anything, but it doesn't do anything either - just for looks.

I have also run a set of Nike and Addidas on the street in 14's and they are currently gathering dust underneath my bed right now...just don't use a set of Red Wings....
