In my quest for a good carburetor for my 74 225 I found a carb base with the correct butterfly plates (no holes) and excellent throttle shaft characteristics. The remainder of the carb was missing oddly enough in this pile of carbs I was looking through so I took the base. I noticed it must be from a later year than the 72 Carter I have. It has a integral return spring on the throttle shaft which is pretty cool. Also it has 2 more vacuum lines which I believe are used for the warm air intake which I could make work. And another larger vac line which I'm not sure what it's for. Anyways I'm wondering if this later model carb base would work with my '72 carburetor? Thanks in advance. |

To a limited degree, you can mix 'n' match like this. The most important comparison to make is the passages on the top machined surface of the throttle body. If all the ones necessary for your middle casting are present and correctly positioned (you can check this with a gasket), and that no passages are present in either casting that will overhang critical edges and create vacuum leaks. The thermal air cleaner started in '70, so both your '72 and '74 should have it. The smaller vacuum port and the larger vacuum port are for the charcoal canister (which might still have been teed into the PCV line in '72). Whatever throttle body you use, make sure it's bushed properly. They tend to wear. |
