Hi my name is Brian im new here I have a 76 Plymouth Volare with a 225 slant 6. My exhaust manifold is cracked and needs to be replaced. I have another manifold from an 82 D150 but the stud and 2 bolts on top that bolt it to the intake are broken. Has any one else had this problem? Do you think I will be able to get them out with easy-outs or should I just go looking for another manifold? thanks, Brian |

A cracked slant exhaust manifold surely you jest. Is it broke right behind cyl 3? If so don't throw it away read up on the forum about dutra duals the supply of cores isn't getting any larger. The two bolts on the end are easy you can just drill them out and put a nut on the bottom of the manifold. The stud is much harder I've seen the center bolt break off but never a stud equipped mani. If it is flush drilling and an easy out are about the only option. If the easy out break you are sol in a big way nothing can drill into a easy out. If some of the stud is still there weld a nut to it heat up the mani where stud goes into it to a nice glow and it should turn out. Thanks, Im going to try an easy-out hopefully it works if not I should be able to find one in the junk yard pretty easily. This is a great site it covers every thing you need to know about slant sixes |

Be really careful with easyouts, most of the time they break in the hole, get stuck in there, and you end up with a bigger problem then you started with. New edxhaust manifolds can be had new (brand new) off of ebay.... I want to say it was under 200 but look to be sure They are also availible from usual parts stores, www.rockauto.com etc but they are more expensive there. If your going junkyard trolling - bring a wire brush to clean them up and inspect carefully - chances are most of them are already cracked or warped so severly you can't get them back on the studs in the head . I agree with mcnoople on thisone though, you may want to look at dutra duals if you want to invest more into your exhaust. |

I am speaking from experience. Be very careful with easy outs. I just broke one off in my cyl. head. I don't have a torch so I just took the head off and took to my machine shop. |

I haven't personally used them but I hear that the hot ticket is reverse rotation drill bits. They have the drill flutes reversed so you need a reversing drill to use them. All of the drilling motion is then applied to the broken bolt and works to turn it out even before you need an EZ-Out! Guys on other forums have raved about how good they work. I would soak for a couple of days with PB Blaster, available from Napa and 10 times as good as WD40 for stuck/rusted fasteners. VERY CAREFULLY center punch the broken bolt or stud in the EXACT CENTER before drilling. Once you start there's no turning back, so centering is critical. JimmieDart |
