im pretty new to this

i have a single barrel stock holley carb in the dart and im having problems. when i try to start the car, gasoline pours from the bowl vent. at the start of the trouble the car started and ran for a few seconds and as soon as i gave it a little gas it died, since then the above problem has occured everytime i try to start. i have the original owners manual but like i said im quite new to this and could use a few pointers.

any info is greatly appreciated

Some of the others may have better insight into it than I do, but in my experience I have seen 2 things that will cause what you are describing. You could have a stuck needle valve, possibly caused by some debris in the gasoline or a sunken float. Many of the early carbs had brass floats and if they weren't carefully aligned they will rub against the sides of the carburetor bowl, eventually wearing a hole which lets fuel flood in and sink the float. In either case a carburetor rebuild and possibly a new float are in order.

You've got one or more of the following carburetor float problems:

•Float soaked with gasoline, therefore too heavy and unable to float: Inlet valve stays open all the time, carburetor overfills.

•Float physically stuck in the down position: Inlet valve stays open all the time, carburetor overfills.

•Float spring broken or missing: Inlet valve stays open all the time, carburetor overfills.

•Inlet needle and/or seat damaged and/or deteriorated: Doesn't close properly, carburetor overfills.

So, either a thorough rebuild of this carburetor or a carefully-selected replacement unit (parts store "remanufactured" carburetors are seldom satisfactory) is in order.

The Holley 1920 has a Nitrophyll (synthetic, "plastic") float—never brass.
