Post subject:  Voltage regulator Question

Is there an out of vehicle test that can be done to evaluate pre electronic ignition voltage regulators?

I have 3 and don't want to toss a good one.

uhhhh, none that i know of (there may be something in an early service manual) except maybe pulling the cover and checking the contacts for burns/pitting, etc. it's basically a set of points in there and they do require adjustment from time to time. i've got a nickel that says a ton of those have been replaced for needing adjustment. but really, whybother with one? electronic VRs are available as a bolt in for the early cars. you may even be able to swap an original cover on one to give it the right look.

Ok, but then you're talking about swapping the distributor as well. If i could afford that, I'd be buying a new VR and toss the old ones, ranther then testing to see if they are still functional.

Thanx though,
Steve

No need to swap the distributor since an electronic regulator only regulates current from the altenator. Now if you're changing to an electronic distributor, you'd want the electronic regulator. All my older toys have been converted both ways and wouldn't go back to points either in my regulator or distributor.
