Any one ever attempt to swap in the nv3500 from the v8 dakota's and rams to a /6? i know anything is doable with enough money? so i guess can this swap be done reasonably?

thanks for your time?

I believe sixinthehead has done this on his 64 Valiant. He only visits here occasionally. His may be a V6 Dak tranny though - nv2500??

alot of the v6 dak's use the ax15 tranny by new process used in all 4cyl dakota applictions and jeep wranglers as well. I have one of those in my turbodakota project and have been told it will not hold up so i am weary of putting it behing a turbo /6 but i guess its an option. ax 15 is easy to find they are everywhere lol.

I have done a little more research and have posted up a couple requests for a833 4 spds. passon performance can regear them to have overdrive which was the purpose of trying to get a 5 spd in my toy to begin with.

thanks for replying though.

I have an AX 15 sitting here for my car. The car's a ways from being ready to get it in there. I was looking for the NV 3500 but found this first. I have a couple of buddies that work in tranny rebuild shops and said that it would hold up. I do plan on doing alot more cruising than racing though. I also have one in my 97 Wrangler. On the Jeeps' using this trans, it was mostly behind the straight 6's. The 4 cyinder ones used a similar but weaker AX-5. This trans definitely is weaker than the AX-15. Both my brother and I have been thru a couple of the AX-5's.- they ARE junk. I am trying, much as possible, to build my Volare from stuff that I already have here to keep the $$$$ down, there are always things that you can't do that with, that have to be bought. My biggest "hangup" on using the AX-15 is that I also would like to keep my car all American made. Being that I am putting it all together
with what I have for it at this point the closest I can say is "Assembled in USA" but not all MADE here.

I have a 904 in my dart now but ive been told it is weak as well.

l i kept the ax15 in my turbo dakota project because a friend had one in his built v6 dakota 300+ hp and it held up with no breakage before he swapped in a nv3500 . My turbo dak is still not rolling yet so i have not had a chance to stress test the ax15 yet  but still alot of my other dakota friends tell me its weak and i will break it quickly. your info is actually a bit reassuring to me. thanks lol

volaredon have you decided how you are going to mount it? hydraulic or linkage clutch and so on? I threw up a couple posts looking for an overdrive a833 if i cant find one i guess the ax15 is next on my list.

i am dak153ci on aol im .. im me if you use that service id like to chat with you a bit if u dont mind

The 904 is weaker then a 727, but will take anyting a slant can dish out. Especially if it is "beefed". All the slant racers, that use an automatic trans, use the 904.

I spoke with guy on bionic dodge that everyone says is the tranny man if u have questions.. he told me i would have to find a 998 or 999 tranny then swap internals over into the 904 case. then buy a shift kit and get a converter to make it handle 300/350 hp. which is where i am guessing i will end up after the injection and turbo mods.

I thought this was alot of work and kind of involved above my skill level. I am kind of afraid of automatics anyways. I know how they work and everything but i am totally clueless as to how to work on or fix them.

Is this what you mean by beefed up?

I thought it would be easier to install a standard tranny than to go through all of this. but maybe i should talk to a couple of the /6 racers on here and ask them some questions.. I have time to kill Im not starting on my dart till mid to late summer. everything now is just acquiring info and laying out a good plan and see how much my toy will cost.[/b]

i threw up a post in the racers gallery asking them how many / what kind of mods and cost to beef up a 904.

i should get some good info since they are the people actually racing them.

thanks for the hint.

I know I'm late to the party, but Lou is right. Mine is a "A-535" according to the tag, which is a 2500, I think. It came out of an 89 Dak 4-cyl.
No durability issues yet, but my little 170 doesn't work it too hard...Yet

I might even be a the wrong party.

I have a 67 D100 w/ NP435. I want to go 5 speed if possible., but might consider an automatic with overdrive.

Does the truck slant use the same or different bellhousing as the v-8s?

Is it different from the cars?

I've been picking up some info fom some different forums, but nothing concrete.

I's like to explore my options and costs, then dream and scheme from there.

The truck slant and the v-8 use different bellhousings. To install an automatic OD, you will need an adapter. It would be possible to use a slant six 727 trans, and a tailshaft mounted aftermarket OD, like the "Gearvenders" unit.. That would not require a engine/trans adapter.

Thanks Charlie!

So, I can use an A833 in the slant?

Any A833, or a truck version?

Can I use the NV2500 that, I think, is used in the V-6s?

Thanks as usual.
Once I get a complete understanding of what's going on here then I will shutup about this topic.

yeah but

better to ask a bunch of questions before you spend a boatload of money and THEN find out what you purchased doesnt work for your application.

this is a good board= alot of slant six experience here and everyone seems nice and more than willing to help from my limited experience

Just saw a Gearvenders ad, and it stated they now have a unit for the 904, also.
